I've done Optifast in the past. However, they didn't have us use Optifast pre surgery. They recommend Boost because they sold it at the hospital, but said we could use whatever Protein Drink that we would stick to. I did the Boost for three weeks pre surgery. It was cheap, it was also sickening sweet, but you can do anything for a short period of time.

if you could start on a weekend or a non work day, that can be helpful. After about the third day, your hunger and cravings should diminish greatly. After a week, people eating around me didn't bother me any longer.

Good luck on your journey.

Some ppl are told Optifast only but my surgeon says any decent Protein Powder will do long as it's highest protein&lowest carbs/sugar.

If you can do the bars, I recommend microwaving the chocolate bar for 30 seconds. It's almost like a brownie then. The soups... well, they're okay. Add in garlic powder to a couple of the Soups to add a bit of seasoning.

I will be having my surgery on 9/4 and have been on Optifast for 4 weeks. 5 shakes a day or 4 shakes and 1 Soup or bar a day. I mixed half vanilla and half chocolate to make it more like chocolate milk. Added powdered sugar free Jello (about 2 tsp) to vanilla to flavor it for variety. I also mixed my morning shake with hot Decaf coffee in the vanilla shake to make it more like a coffee drink. Walden's Farms (can be bought online) products are sugar/fat/carb free and come in salad dressings, seafood sauce, barbeque sauce, etc. and are tasty, inexpensive and allowed freely on my surgeon's diet. I could have unlimited cucumbers, dill pickles, SF jello and SF popsicles. If you use the Optifast Soups, mix in boiling Water to dissolve the powder best. Good luck. You can do it!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
