Went in for RNY & came out with sleeve

Recommended Posts

After much research I had my heart set on RNY. When I sat down with the team PA 10 days before surgery he mentioned that because I had a previous c-section they might have to sleeve because of scar tissue. Has this happened to anyone else?
Other than that.,, I’m feeling pretty darn good. A little cranky because I had nothing but an IV for 36 hours.
Did anyone else go in for RNY & come out with Sleeve?

I've heard of quite a few who had this occur. But they have done really well with it! The sleeve is a great surgery and many of the most successful vets here have a long term sleeve and are maintaining their longterm goal weights!

Congrats on getting through surgery and on joining the losers' bench. You're gonna do great!!! Walk, walk, walk, sip, sip, sip!!!

Because of a Csection? That’s crazy

It made me think twice but it would be upsetting if I felt he had other motives

Ty very much!! I’m so psyched to be on the other side of this. Sometimes when you’re waiting you feel as though it’s never going to happen

I read something regarding this as far as scar tissue from prior operations (hysterectomy) caused the surgery to be sleeve instead of Rny.

I have to have sleeve too! I’ve had numerous stomach surgeries. Dr said too much scar tissue.

Hi there! How are you doing & where are you in your recovery?

I don't blame you one bit. I've had multiple abdominal surgeries, and this never once came up as a possibility.

That said, as understandable as your disappointment is - like others have said, I hear about amazingly successful Gastric Sleeve patients all the time! You've got this! 👍

Ty! I’ve had time to focus on all the positive & I’m thinking my surgeon probably did what was best for me. I do trust him. I was also upset because 12 hours out of surgery in my painkiller haze after asking multiple people which surgery I had... I finally found a nurse who told me that I had the sleeve. My surgeon apologized for that. He thought someone had told me. ❤️

OOF how awful for you, that is unacceptable (the hospital staff lack of communication and follow-through to you, the patient!) though I agree with you about trusting your surgeon, and that is so important.

I'm impressed with your positive attitude and that you seem adjusted to the semi-shock of the news - that bodes so well for your future success!! :)

I have had appendix in my 20s, 3 c-sections in my 30’s then a hysterectomy. My surgeon was extremely worried about scar tissue around my intestines and not being able to to rny.

I had to sign a release that if for whatever reason rny couldn’t be performed by keyhole surgery what options I choose next. I selected rny by open surgery, then if rny was completely off the table then sleeve as last resort over closing me up and doing nothing.

I got lucky and got my rny done by keyhole. When they removed my appendix it was wrapped around my bowel and I had to have open surgery to untangle it all. My appendix scar goes from my right hip And stops halfway between my belly button and left hip on the otherside of my tummy, it is long. My c-section scars are tiny compared to it, and they removed babies not just an appendix. So going into this I was extremely worried about scar tissue preventing any surgery taking place.

I’m sorry you didn’t get the surgery you thought you was going to get. But please try and look in the brightside, atleast they gave you a sleeve and didn’t close you up and make you decide later what you wanted to do. That would be so much worse having to go back to get a sleeve later and come out with no surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
