Whose goal weight are you using? Your own or your program's?

Recommended Posts

I did not have a program so much as a surgeon. Despite having the excellent certificate it was approximately five appointments in total. Their goal was 145 lbs. mine is 125 lbs. They certainly are able to increase their success rate if the goal is still in the overweight category. Post op visit 3 with one of the staff they presented me with a $300 doctors bill for weight management and I never went back. Established good wait for myself with my internal care provider who is my go to for everything health related.

I've been struggling with the slowest weight loss and longest stall ever in history (being a little dramatic, but still...). I'm not very close to my own chosen goal, and my therapist suggested I compare what my goal is compared to my program's. I dug out my paperwork, and the program's goal for me is 18 pounds heavier.

I see a lot of people here with a similar height to mine that have a goal weight of 50 pounds or more less than mine.

So I'm just curious, where did everyone's listed goal weight come from? Thanks everyone.

You are doing great. Try not to compare your weight loss and goals to others. It will make you crazy. We all lose at different rates. It’s not how fast, it the fact you are losing weight.

Your surgery date is 5/28/19. Your only three months out? Congratulations on hitting under your programs goal by 18lbs. - Use the search on this site to see how common a third month stall is. My surgeon does not set goals for patients. I was told 60% total weight loss is the norm with the sleeve (Some lose less some lose more)

Only a suggestion. Work on small goals. No need to pick a certain goal weight at this point. As you get closer to a year out, decide on a goal weight that feels healthy for you. I pulled my goal weight out of the air after looking at a BMI chart. I am a healthy weight and that is all the matters to me.

I'm using my own goal, and a healthy weight I weighed for most of my adult life before I ballooned up! lol. My surgeon's group has a more conservative goal of 15-20 pounds more. We'll see what my body and metabolism have to say on the matter! I'm remaining flexible. Only 4.5 months post bypass, so we'll see!!

Thanks for the encouragement. But my surgery was actually 5/29/18. So, not quite as good, but I'm getting back on track. I really do think that my struggle is helping me to learn/keep good habits. At least, I hope the struggle is helping me.

mine has changed many times over the last 2 years. what you see on the left is the adjusted goal.

as i made my goal i moved to a new goal. it was never a destination but a part of the journey

my doctor was happy with my progress at every visit and never set a number goal.

of course the standard wording about Avg. weight loss of 60% of EXCESS weight was included in my mountains of paperwork with all the disclaimers that everyone is different.

just do you. for as long as you can at whatever pace your body will accept. You may keep going down for many years or you may just stop one day and that will be it.

whatever weight you get to be as healthy at that weight as you can be.

good luck and best wishes

Yeah that BMI chart is So vague like my goal is between 85-90kgs (190-200) and It says BMI 25-26 is considered overweight by most charts but yours above says healthy so it's confusing lol

my doctor said he'll be happy to see me below 100kg (220) as every single kg will decrease my risks of heart problems and extend my life :)

Believe it or not, my doctor didn't give me a goal. I set it myself. We discussed it, but ultimately he left it up to me.

My ideal weight is supposed to be 150-155, but I have never been able to maintain that weight. I have old photos of myself at or near that weight and to me, I think I was just a little too thin. So, I set my own goal at 175 which is still in a "normal" BMI range but I thought more reasonable to achieve and maintain.

I just noticed your username, and wanted to say I just started watching Outlander a couple weeks ago! My surgery was Monday, I was discharged yesterday, and I’ve already watched 2 episodes today. Almost done with season 2. It’s helping to distract me from the pain.

@mr.sean I stumbled across the 1st season of Outlander 5 years ago. My husband had been relocated for work and I was alone managing the details of a cross-country move. I've read the books multiple times and watched all available seasons (most episodes more than once). I Love Outlander! At a difficult time in my life, it filled the void and gave me something to look forward to.

Now, considering I'm a Texas transplant, I feel a little like an Outlander so the username fit my heart and my circumstance!

I hope you find it as enjoyable as I have (and still do)!

My Dr did the same. After pushing my nutritionist I got her to say 150-155 for me. I'm 5' 6.5". I'm 157 now, one year post surgery and I feel really good about where I am. If I lose too much more I think I'll look gaunt. I'll see what the Dr says at my appt next week.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
