OMG! I have cheated! I feel horrible! I had a tiny piece of carrot cake yesterday and a couple spoonfuls of banana pudding and my stomach didnt reject it! I'm horrified now because I thought I would never be able to eat sweets again! My stomach betrayed me and I betrayed myself! Now that Im feeling better Im noticing that my.addiction to sugar is still there. I cant fail myself! Ugh!

And now you know! It's ok, really. This is all part of a learning experience. You were always going to be curious until you tried it out. You learned that you're going to have to depend on yourself and your choices to avoid too much sugar, that your wls isn't going to help much in that regard.

This is a long-haul process. Don't beat yourself up over a bump in the road. Now you need to figure out what your triggers are and how to avoid or control them.

This.

WLS won't help cravings in the long run (at least it's like that for most of us as it seems) and one should be making plans on how to deal with them.

The food triggers are everywhere (except maybe your own home if you're the one deciding what foods to buy or not) and other people usually won't accommodate to your dietary choices as well.

I also wonder what kind of surgeon or dietician tells a patient that he/she will never be able to eat sweets again.

yep - part of your ultimate success is due to the surgery, and part of it is due to you. People who rely on the surgery alone are rarely successful. This takes work! So....now you know!

Just because you slipped up once doesn't mean that you'll go back to your old habits. You need to trust yourself that you can overcome your addictions and live a healthy life. Besides, your new stomach not rejecting something today doesn't mean it won't tomorrow. I had a couple of spoons of ice cream with chocolate and was fine the first time. Next time I had such horrible dumping I swore I would never again eat anything chocolate.

Regarding cravings etc. I don't get tired of recommending books about "normal eating" or "intuitive eating". These books are very, very helpful even though (or maybe because?) they don't deal with post-WLS stuff, nutrition etc. - However, the opinions on this approach vary. Many post-WLS people seem to prefer the OA/addiction approach with abstinence being the key to success.

For an interesting kind of view on bingeing/LOC eating "Brain over Binge" is a gem IMO, but again this might not be everyone's cup of tea.

People need to do what they need to do to feel good long term (like really good, not trying to convince yourself that everything's fine, even though you secretly hate the way you're living your life when it comes to food and/or exercise).

I’m with you. I went to a restaurant for the first time post op yesterday. I was overwhelmed and ordered what the “old me” would order. I was horrified when the food came. I managed to eat 3 bites..very small bites. Then asked for it to be boxed up. Once home I tried a few more bites and then ended up throwing it all out.

All in all..I don’t think I’m ready for the “real world” or restaurants and normal meals with others. Plus I feel terrible about my choices.

Baby steps to the new me...

Nobody ever got fat eating a tiny piece of carrot cake every once in a while. They got fat because they ate the whole cake. Dont be so hard on yourself and strive for balance. What you do not want to happen is fostering all this resentment toward food that could lead to seriously destructive behavior down the road.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
