Caffeine

Recommended Posts

I am not having fun coming of caffeine before surgery. Probably after the headaches go away I will be fine. Then the artificial sweeteners will be next. I have 2 months so I am sure I can do this. I am not required to do a liquid diet b4 hand. I might do it anyway just to prepare my liver to shrink down. I hope I have not gained since last visit. How did you do in breaking your caffeine addiction?

I thought it was going to be more difficult than it actually was. I quickly found that drinking Decaf took care of my "addiction" and trust me, I drank 2 of the monster energy drinks every day in addition to my morning coffee(s). Keep your eyes on the long term goal. It's amazing what getting the proper amount of sleep will do for your caffeine addictions. I had to change that as well. Fortunately for me, the same time I had to give up caffeine I also got my APAP machine, so that helped with my sleepiness as well.

Good luck to you.

I weaned myself gradually off it. 1/4 Decaf, 3/4 caffeinated for a week or two, then 1/2 decaf, 1/2 caffeinated for another week or two, and so on until I was just drinking decaf.

About three weeks prior to surgery I stopped all caffeine. It wasn't bad so I thought, what the heck, I'll just start again and then stop a couple days before surgery. Big mistake. BIG! Massive headaches and withdrawals. Now I only drink Decaf and even stay away from tea because I figure my body is used to not having it!

I will eventually need to stop decaffeinated and drink just Water I guess. What did your nutritionists say about not drinking decaffeinated either or is it ok.

The headaches are so bad but hope I will be able to stay off my diet cokes. I've drank them for 16yrs. Alot of food addiction trying to break before October.

I couldn't have either one immediately after surgery (decaf still has acid in it, even though it doesn't have caffeine - and acid can also be hard on healing stomachs), but I was allowed Decaf fairly soon afterward - maybe at about a month out? I can't remember. I had to wait six months before I could have regular again.

some surgeons allow decaf right away - and some even allow regular right away. They seem to be all across the board on this.

I weaned off with Decaf, which I thought I would continue after surgery. But, low and behold, I couldn't tolerate it at all. All of a sudden, coffee tasted terrible. I tried a sip the other day and it was just awful - not at all like I remember. Funny thing is that green tea started to taste sweet instead of astringent. I drink decaffeinated green tea or herbal teas now. I am very wary of the acid in coffee, as I have Barretts esophagitis and even developed a Barretts polyp. So I don't want to do anything that would increase the risk of cancer or ulcers. I don't miss the coffee at all.

Diet Coke is another story! I stopped Diet Coke about 3 years ago and it was agony. It took the better part of 2 years before my car stopped wanting to pull into the McDonald's drive through! That stuff is soooooo addicting! But I haven't had a sip since and I know if I did it would probably taste terrible. Again - a good addiction to break. The acid is bad for stomach and teeth. Did you know that soda (regular or diet) is listed as a factor contributing the fatty liver disease? There is nothing good about it.

A couple weeks before surgery, I went off all sugar. What a blessing! I don't want dumping, so that was a no brainer. Without sugar and caffeine, my energy levels are so consistent, with no afternoon slump. One of the best things I've ever done as far as diet goes.

I used to be a Diet Cocaholic. I have taken exactly two sips of Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi since surgery (at at least three years out), and I thought I was going to DIE. It tasted like chemicals. Absolutely disgusting!

When I cut out coffee, it's usually cold turkey but I use tasty close alternatives

Here are my favorites:

The Postum is the superior one but usually quite hard to find. Ive drank it since childhood & the company stopped producing it about a decade ago , but i found links on Amazon so maybe they started again.

Cafix is my runner up.

Good Luck 💜

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
