Post op blood tests - high RDW

Recommended Posts

I just got the results of my blood test (it's after hours so I can't call the MD until tomorrow or Monday). Everything came back fine except my Vitamin B-12 was really high. It said over 2000 but didn't give a number with the normal range of 232 - 1045. I also had a high RWD of 17.2 with normal 12.3-15.4%. I looked online and it seems that because my MCV value is normal that it could be a folate, Iron or B12 deficiency. So I'm guessing its iron/folate. Did anyone else have this? Did your MD have you increase iron supplements?

I can tell you that they won't be worried about your MVC because it isn't high enough to cause a big concern. I work in the medical field and was told this by a DR. But, I don't understand why they make ranges if someone can be off but it's not concerning. Don't stress to much over it :)

mine (RDW) was about there and they didn't seem to care. It's really not high enough to be of concern.

as for B12, they really don't worry about high levels. Until recently, mine was always around 2000 or more. I did cut back on my supplements a bit because it was clear my body didn't need that much, so I was wasting money by continuing to take as much as I was. Even prior to surgery and prior to taking B12 supplements, my level was always high. No one ever said "boo" about it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
