I had the sleeve surgery on July 17 of this year. The end of last week my teeth molars on my left side top and bottom have started to hurt. Anyone experienced this?

Curious. At my dental visits, the gums around my back molars are showing signs of periodontal disease where I never had before. I haven't changed my dental routine and in fact, I have stepped it up a notch to combat these deepening pockets.

Wonder if there's a connection?

I kind of doubt it. It's probably just age-related (I have periodontal disease and have since before surgery four years ago - it hasn't gotten any worse). When people have surgery-related dental issues, it always seems to be tooth decay caused by excess acid (from vomiting or uncontrolled GERD), according to my dentist. Although most people don't experience dental issues as long as they have regular checkups and take care of their teeth.

I totally agree with the reflux theory. When I first started getting reflux, I was at the dentist one day (1990's) and they said I had sum gum issues. I asked if it could be related to reflux and they said no. I am glad that dentists now agree that it is an issue!

my dentist said he's never personally seen dental issues in his patients who've had WLS, although he'd read about issues in the professional literature. Also, I've been on these internet forums for at the last five years or so, and I only see posts about tooth problems maybe twice a year, so my assumption is, although it can happen, it's pretty uncommon. My dentist gave me a prescription for some super-high fluoride toothpaste to use before I go to bed, though, and he puts a fluoride varnish on my teeth twice a year at my appts. He said that should go a long way toward preventing any potential issues.

I never thought of all the extra chewing thanks that could be some of it or maybe all of it since I haven’t had any Dental issues of late. Have a great day.

My dentist talked to me about this before surgery. She said that acid from our stomachs get worse after the surgery and can cause this. She gave me a special toothpaste to try to alleviate it. I go back on Tuesday and will keep you all posted!

you may be OK with just the special toothpaste - but I'd ask anyway. I kinda wonder if mine did both (the prescription + the fluoride varnish) just to placate me because I was so freaked out about the possibility of tooth problems. But I'd ask just in case.

Hey I am new here. I am sorry that your teeth hurt. Maybe you need you visit your dentist. I have my first consult with the surgeon in August 29th,2019. It will be done at Erlanger Baroness downtown Chattanooga. My insurance deductible has been met, so I hope to get it in by November at the latest depending on what gets done besides meetings before surgery.

@Goldn02GrlCan you tell us what toothpaste that is so that we can ask our dentists?

My dental hygienist believes the problem is acid and I have been on a regime to help with the erosion of the enamel. I would certainly be interested in a special toothpaste to help!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
