On what basis is polygamy illegal?

Recommended Posts

As Blueeyedkitty said, the polygamous groups are NOT members of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints (aka "the Mormons"). The our groups that have left the fold of th church and formed their own churchs. If you are interested in the beliefs of our church go to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or Mormon.org

I always joke to my husband, that he will always be my number one, but if ever I were allowed to have more than one husband, why not. Always been a sexist pig. In the reverse.:)

I always tell my husband that you never hear of a woman stupid enough to want TWO husbands . . .

I thought someone should just clarify one little thing, Wasa...

There are no Mormons in Colorado City. The people to whom you are referring are NOT mormons.

Yeah they are. Just like Christians determine others are not Christian I suppose every religion makes the same claims.

You may not agree with them but remember, they don't agree with you either.

and just because you think you know what a mormon is doesn't mean you are correct. If you really want to know what a mormon is, check out the links above on Miztrniceguys post.

any members of our church found to be currently practicing polygamy are excommunicated...meaning kicked out...and there membership is revoked. this mean they are NOT members.

There are different types of Mormons just like there are different types of Christians. I don't think any rational person (and I grant you, there are plenty of irrational folks out there) would believe they are a reflection on the more normal type of Mormons.

If someone tells me they are Mormon, Christian, Jewish, etc., I figure I'm nobody to say they aren't. That's between the person and their God. My opinion, of course.

Mormons are Christians. We believe in Jesus Christ.

I know that, I didn't mean to imply otherwise yet I know I did. Poor wording.

Allow me to clarify, there are different kinds of Catholocism, different kinds of Mormons, different kinds of Jews, etc. Regardless, if someone tells me they are a given religion I figure it's up to their God to see if they are meeting the required standards and rules.

"Mormons are Christians. We believe in Jesus Christ."

I guess this goes back to who you are asking. Not that I am a practicing Methodist anymore, but the United Methodist Church teaches Mormons are cultists and not Christian. I don't care either way, but there is a lot of confusion out there, especially when millions of Protestants (my Baptist friends were taught the same information) learn from their church about other religions. We were even taught the founder of the Mormon church was visited by "an angel of light" and given instruction on writing the Book of Mormon. One catch to that story is Protestants believe the angel of light is Satan.

From where I am standing I see you all as being theists who believe in Jesus Christ. The rest is a choice in decor.

"Hahahaha!!!"

It sounds funny, but it is not, as there are still millions of those out there who remain unenlightened about the true roots of the Mormon religion. Not only are they ignorant; they will be obtuse enough to not want to hear the truth. The only reason I know the whole "Satan gave Joseph Smith the means to write the Book of Mormon" is false is because Satan does not exist. He doesn't need to. Humans are fully capable of unspeakable "evil" without the intervention of a supernatural being. There is no one responsible for our failings or good fortunes other than ourselves.

Hear hear. Couldn't agree more.

Personally, I don't need a devil type guy to tempt me to do bad things, I'll take responsibility for that one all by myself. If I do something wrong I tempted myself, I talked myself into it, and I take FULL responsibility. Nobody else plays a role, just me. Same goes with the good behaviors. I take full credit for that as well.

There is a branch of the Mormon church that broke off LONG ago and they do practice polygamy but LDS people (Mormons) we do not consider them a part of our church. Also Mormons Do consider themselves Christans, we believe in Christ. I know its hard for non-LDS people to not generalize us into a lump with other churches that call themselves Mormon but religion is one of those thing most people dont understand every aspect of every religion. There are just too many.

As for Polygamy many other countries practice this regularly as part of thier culture. Speaking for my own feelings on the matter, I could never see myself being in a situation like this. If I were raised that way maybe I would feel different but I am way too jealous to handle anything like that. As for Polygamy in the US I think it can be a hardship for our country seeing as many of the people (not all) put there wives and children on Welfare to help keep thier families running.

In Isalm the teaching is that a man may take additional wives with a limit of four providing that he is financially capable of treating each and everyone of them in the same manner as he treats his first wife. His wives must be treated the same in all material ways.

I believe that those cultures who permit more than one wife or permit concubinage likely initially did so as a means of insuring that those women who were left without mates due to tribal warfare would still be allowed to have sexual comfort, to have children, and to find themselves under the protection of a man. It was, in short, a way of dealing with the problem of surplus women in more primitive times. And obviously men benefited from this practice, too, but those men were the elite of their societies, rarely the poor peasants. Maintaining a large household is expensive, you know. :)

Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?
