Bypass or Sleeve

Recommended Posts

I have a question I want to gastric bypass because of 30 years of acid reflux I've always suffered from gerd if I stop taking my medication for more than one day I'm in agony. But doctors keep telling me the sleeve is better. What can I say to convince them differently?

I personally do not recommend sleeve surgery. I too have several years of reflux and decided to get the sleeve thinking it would help after weight loss but it did not. It increased my reflux which now I have to take daily meds. For us with Gerd conditions the best option is RnY due to the fact that it's impossible for reflux to travel back up.

I have to agree . I had a hiatal hernia fixed during my sleeve in December and despite the repair the reflux came back with a vengeance . I am slimmer than I have ever been, 5 lbs from goal but had to increase my meds from lansaprozole to include famotidine as well and went from taking just am to pm as well

However it’s manageable, I am happy with my new weight and there is the obvious benefits from not doing RNY- I don’t worry about dumping etc and my digestion is the same . Sounds like u have an extreme case and I would chat with ur doctor

Some surgeons dont perform RNY. it seems like instead of just saying that he doesn't want to lose money or something. I'd go to another surgeon and make sure he/she performs RNY

I just had surgery Wednesday and my doctor did not want to do the sleeve at all on me because I have acid reflux. Mine is silent, meaning I have zero symptoms, but it had already caused damage in my esophagus. He said the bypass was much better for those with reflux because the sleeve can make it worse.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
