Hi all
I had my surgery Wednesday now it’s Sunday. When I got home from the hospital I weighed 5 lbs more than I was pre surgery. Several days later Still few lbs more than pre op. This is extremely discouraging! Is this normal ?

yes. You were pumped full of IV fluids in the hospital - and they contain a lot of sodium to boot. I've heard of people gaining 10 lbs or more from them. They'll work their way out in a few days. I just stayed off the scale that first week because I knew chances were good that my weight would be up, esp since I retain Water when I get too much sodium!

I didn’t get on the scale but i felt the same way. But you have to realize that they kept you on a constant bag of saline why you were there. And that’s why they also tell you to move around to release the gas . My stomach was huge when i went home. I had my surgery on Monday the 29th. Now when i look at my stomach today it has went down tremendously. It’s smaller then before surgery. Just continue to walk and don’t get back on the scale. It’s your enemy . Lol

You're full of inflammation from the trauma from the surgery and also IV fluids. Don't weigh yourself for a while. It's temporary.

Normal. I was up 10+ lbs from surgery.
Me, too! It actually took me a week or longer to get back to day-of-surgery weight. Hang in there and try not to be discouraged.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
