Has anyone ever heard of needing donated blood for the surgery?

Recommended Posts

My husband is concerned that I might need blood during the surgery for some reason and I am not donating any for myself, or that they won't have blood for me if I need it. To my knowledge, there isn't any reason to receive blood because it's not that of an invasive procedure. Just wondering if anyone knows anything about this.

Blood loss is a risk in any surgery, but it is extremely rare with this type of surgery. My lap-band surgeon said that you lose less than a tablespoon of blood during this procedure. Of course accidents happen and something could go wrong during the surgery, so that's why they ask you to consent to a blood transfusion in case of an emergency. And in the event you might need blood, of course the hospital will have it. This entire issue is not something that I'd waste time worrying about.

My spleen was nicked during my banding and I bled and that is why I was kept over night. However, I needed no transfusions of any kind was just getting lots of fluids. I had not trouble since then.

I have been tired but I think that was going back to work and 10 hour days.

As others have said, it would be REALLY out of the ordinary for you to need a transfusion.

To put your mind at ease, you could always donate blood to be used if you did need a transfusion for some reason. Talk to your doc.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
