Chinese Food Puree

Ok, I am being serious. At the end of my first week on pureed foods I was craving the Chinese food flavors. So I ordered chicken and Vegs in brown sauce and asked the lady for extra sauce (I told her I had to put in blender so she laughed and said no problem) Other that it looking strange when all blended it tasted heavenly :) I'm only eating 3 ounces in a meal so I have to put over half of it in the freezer as it will last me over a week. I figure since it's just 3 oz, it can't be too many calories, any thoughts ?

Well...I'd say good initiative. But here's the dealio. :( The most calorie dense and craptastically chemical laden portion of chinese takeout is...

dunh, dunh, dunhhhhh....

wait for it.

The Sauce. :(

So by ordering the extra sauce you essentially "super sized" your food.< /span>

An alternative would have been to have it with sauce on the side. Puree the solids with a broth that has a little soy, a little sesame oil, ginger and garlic (all pretty low cal/healthy if you limit the soy and the sesame oil. Then you could add a tablespoon or less of the calorie dense sauce to your puree servings at the time you eat.

In the early days I would buy the ready made sauces that had the fewest calories, carbs, sugar, fat, chemicals and keep them on hand. Then I'd take regular food and just put a teaspoon of the sauce on it--or a tablespoon.

You want your calories as low as possible and the nutrients as HIGH as possible. I call it the calorie bang for the buck.

Oh Darn, Thanks for the info, I hadn't thought about this sauce being high in calories. I thought I was getting a good mix of Protein and vegetables. I guess I'll try it without the sauce. I bet it still tastes good.

Also hidden sugar. So just watch and see how it goes down. Do you continue to lose weight? Do you stall? Do you retain Water? Do you dump from it?

So much sodium! drinks loads of Water.
Also, I’d advice against puréeing any further meals, just because you CAN eat it, doesn’t mean you should

As an Asian American and bariatric patient who's family once owned a take out restaurant my advice is to, STAY AWAY FROM THE CHINESE food. It is not healthy in the least bit. Between the fats, sodium and other flavor enhancers you are basically eating fast food. After WLS I have stayed away from fast foods. Unless you want just plain steamed chicken and veggies (skip the rice) there is nothing good to be had by eating Chinese take out food.

Now is the time to reset your "food universe" get rid of the bad foods and introduce the healthy foods that will help with long term weight loss maintenance. Your over all health is improving and by working on mindful eating and making better choices that good health will stay with you for a long time.

As per Doctors orders I have to be on pureed foods for 2 more weeks. Then on to regular foods.

Correct, but it’s my understanding (others might disagree) that purées are more like tuna or shredded chicken, not just taking regular foods and blending them up. I could take a Big Mac and blend it up, but that’s not what I would consider a “purée”
I just want people to make the most of their WLS

My puréed Foods were things like yogurt, ricotta cheese, applesauce (unsweetened), non-chunky Soups, thin cream of wheat... I never actually puréed anything except canned peaches and pears.


This is good advise, it’s the route I went as well. Two weeks seems like an eternity when you’re in the middle of the purée diet. But in the scheme of things it’s a really short amount of time. Use it to get your body adjusted. It’s your time to get mind over matter. You’ll be successful no doubt, just be patient. If there is some taste you are craving, get creative, hit up Pinterest or google and search low or no carb foods for whatever you desire. Tons of stuff out there.

@texasnewf So the thing we're all jumping on here to discuss is that this is the new post surgery honeymoon period. As a doc explained to me that in the first 2 months you will lose the MOST amount of weight you will ever lose as a direct result of this surgery. She explained that it was because of the extreme calorie/volume restriction.

But any of us can game the system from the get go. We do that by drinking liquid calories, or eating "slider" calories. Even from day 1 post surgery! If you eat high calorie (dense calories) with high fat and high sugar and highly processed, it will impact your health and also the rate of loss.

So in essence, you are trying to "game the system" because of your food addictions and food enmeshment. The honeymoon period as was said above, is to allow you time to begin breaking up with food. Embrace the suck. Embrace "boring" (ie not Chinese or Pizza). LOL. Embrace food antipathy. Keep your Protein high, carbs and fat low and learn that life is about more than that next fix--that next bite.

During the honeymoon phase you CAN actually rebuild your gut biome. By eating health foods: lean dense protein, veggies, healthy fats and a TINY amount of dark berries you get to where you crave THAT kind of food! You crave healthy foods prepared simply and cleanly. And at some point the cease to be "boring" and rather just "pure" or "cleanly prepared." But you don't get there if you continue to use your old food crutches of Chinese/Pizza/Mexican highly processed foods.

And I think that's what we're all kinda a little "undone" about in your post. And with the newest batch of newbies this summer...

Exactly that one meal of Chinese could essentially undo everything that the surgery has done...

The surgery is to completely reset your system and you start day 1 lowest calories highest Protein as fluffy said!!!

        Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive).
