I had my RnY surgery about a week ago from today, last night I was laying in bed and I was woken up by a random dry cough, now what worries me is being half asleep I didn’t support my tummy like I usually do and the pain was intense it was different it was like doing sit ups and stretching your body so you feel as if you pulled or strained a muscle but in this case my intestine. I don’t have pain on a regular and it only feels uncomfortable when I stretch or bend forward, the cough was pretty intense, like a shift in my body. I just wanted to know if any else has experienced this? Before I go crazy overthinking this more than I already have

yep, it hurts to cough. wait until you sneeze.

(so long as the pain goes away eventually, you are ok)

Im also one week and a day post surgery. Yes, i was taking my meds a couple days ago and it must have went down the wrong way, i had a coughing fit for about 10 mins and i was in agony! I had to take pain meds yesterday and today as it now is sore to bend or stretch. Pain today is better than yesterday tho.

Good luck!

Your abdominal wall is still healing from those incisions and what your feeling is likely the muscle layer, not the internal organs. Splinting those coughs are important to maintain the integrity of your abdominal wall so it heals properly and hernias don't form.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
