One month post op, difficult getting in calories and protein!

Recommended Posts

I'm struggling with staying in the 400-500 cal range while getting in enough protein! Any suggestions? I get in between 40 to 50 g of Protein daily.

Feels like a frustrating puzzle at times..

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

BTW down 36 lbs!

Protein Powder. Add it to yoghurt, smoothies, Soup, refried Beans, just about anything.

600-800 calories is probably a good goal at this point in your WLS progress. You can up the calories and add in a few things.

Ask your team for suggestions, especially the nutritionist or dieticians. You may be exactly where they anticipated or need to adjust a few things to get you there.

Good Luck 💜

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions... hard to see the upload of diet, but can make most of it out, even with enlarging. I am to eat 3 meals per day, 1 snack, no more than 5 hours apart.

Last week better but not getting in enough veggies either. Trying to be ingenious about adding Protein and not calories.

I bought unflavored Protein powder and add it to Soups, yogurt, purées. That had been helping tremendously in trying to achieve my daily goals.

I went to GNC and bought GENEPRO. They were very nice and helpful to find the right protein that would work for me.

You're doing great! I'd make my fat free milk the Fairlife milk to max Protein on it, and as @MeepMeep suggested, you can even mix a little protein into your mashed potatoes (which I would replace with smashed cauliflower ;) ). But don't worry about your veggies yet. Those will come with progress. Worry about maxing protein within your very narrow volume per meal eating window!! Remember, down Protein Drinks as Fluid and that will give you latitude to do an all veggie snack or meal by helping you load up on protien!

Thank you... this morning I had 1/2 cup fairlife skim milk, plus 1/2 cup Water, plus 1 scoop of my strawberries and cream Protein powder no carb Isopure and got in 32 grams of protein.. and only 145 cal1

Does anyone have a favorite high protein, low calorie cracker they like? 1 to 2 per day with tuna or something like that?

I’m exactly the same. I can’t get anything down, even Water, without it coming back up.

Don't do it. Don't add crackers this soon. :( Take advantage of staying away from slidery foods! Just be a good girl and eat your tuna plain with a fork. Or use an ounce of avocado with it and a grape Tomato. Whatever you're allowed at your stage. But at mine, if I could have tuna, I could have some avocado.

Those having issues getting fluids down, experiment with the temperature. To this day, room temp and warm/hot go down easier for me than cold. Cold makes me belch and knots up my tool a little.

Thanks for the feedback. Haven't had trouble with the couple of crackers I've had but today was MISERABLE after I got dry ground beef/rice (pureed).. only about 1/8 c of food stuck in my stomach, foamies and the whole nine yard, finally vomited after a couple of hours. I can never foresee this coming. Small bites, chew, chew ,chew... the first and only time since surgery I've vomited. Taking it easy, liquids only for a while.

meat Lube. Don't try dry at this stage. I think for the first 2 months anything I ate had a spoon of low cal, low fat, low/no sugar gravy on it--or Marinara--or light Alfredo sauce. I used moist meats and tiny bites. And being WELL hydrated will help improve your ability to keep things down. You don't have to cook meat in it, just top the meat with some meat lube. Sorry about the foamies, step back a stage today to let the irritation heal.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
