State Fair-Eye Opener

Recommended Posts

Last night my husband and I went to the State Fair and let me tell you, my eyes were really opened to the fact that the majority of food sold at the Fair can NOT be consumed by people who had Bariatric surgery! From Corn Dogs, Funnel cakes, cheese steaks, French fries, kettle corn, snow cones and even tacos all delicious foods I used to indulge in I had to walk away from. Amazingly my new "stomach" did not feel one hunger pain while I was at the Fair for 4 hours. I was really shocked at the poor quality of food and two months ago (before I had vgs) I would have indulged like everyone else. I went home and ate a nice home cooked dinner. Yay me!

Since the Fair is usually a one time a year type thing, I certainly feel I can indulge now that I’m in maintenance. 😊

I plan to try the things (I can have) too!

Yes plenty of events have all convenience foods so we have to learn to prepare meals in advance :)

I recently spent a full day 11am-11pm at our state fair, met family there and then stayed with my mom (also post RNY) for a concert that evening. And I was expecting there to be nothing that we could eat there, and for the most part I was right

HOWEVER I was very surprised to find there were some healthy options. I got a grilled chicken sandwich at one stall with peppers, onions, and mushrooms and ate part of the meat and veg no bread, and for dinner we found a "Tastes of Ohio" restaurant that was selling various meats and shared a delicious grilled chicken meal with my mom complete with fresh cooked green beans!

We did indulge and had a few bites of ice cream YUMM but for the most part we were very proud of ourselves for navigating what we expected to be a tough day cravings wise without really any cravings at all (That got oil smell is so off-putting now)

So don't give up hope even though there were an alarming amount of deep fried foods there were some decent choices mixed in

Just lost any desire for such food. Used to like it - before. It is an adjustment to e picky. After so many years I know I come off like a food snob Kabobs - 🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻 meat on a stick is my go to in the carnival - food truck world.

Unf. I don't even want those foods... looking at them makes me feel gross. lol. So much batter and grease! The furthest "astray" I have gone is getting lightly battered tofu. LOL.

Yeah 🐭🐺and I even peel batters off, knock crumb coatings into oblivion. Why Oh Why did I once THINK they tasted good? Even milk with more than 1% butterfat is like drinking Crisco, and I never could have suspected I'd even feel that way!

That about sums it up for me!

I haven't gone to the the state fair in years. When you try hard enough/and look long enough, sure you "might" find "better/healthier" foods - but there are sooooo many yummy, delicious other foods,

too much, too much, too much. it's not that i don't trust myself - it's food, it freely and willingly jump into my hands - and into my mouth!! aka attack of the apple fritters!!🤣

knowing my weaknesses are important for me, the fair is at the top of my list of no no no!!

for me, my portions and of course avoiding the exit sign toward the state fare are essential.😉

recognizing my problems are 1/2 the solution

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
