What was your pre-op liquid diet?

Recommended Posts

It’s so interesting how different surgeons are with their requirements! My pre op is completely different than friends who had it earlier this year. I wonder how surgeons choose what diets they require. What was yours?

I've been told mine will most likely be 2-3 Protein Shakes a day with a cup of veges if needed..

Ours was Clear Liquids only the day before surgery, and then a bowel prep/clean out in the afternoon. The doc who runs our support group now quite specifically doesn't want his patients doing any kind of multi-week fasting diet as he wants them as strong as possible going into surgery, and fasting doesn't do it. It's a big YMMV thing.

Our office bases it on your BMI-I am required to do a two week diet with 6-8 shakes per day. I am actually starting out with the plan for the BMI higher than mine which is 4 shakes and a low carb meal for two weeks and then the two week shake only diet. ( I am also adding veggies for Snacks for the first week)
I have a LOT of bad habits and just thought it would be better to transition like this.

Mine provided me with the exact supplements and portions that I was to have for the 10 days prior to surgery. I was only allowed the things they gave me.

It was a Protein Shake at Breakfast, lunch, and dinner (vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry), an protein-enhanced oatmeal packet at lunch and dehydrated Protein Soup (variety packets) for lunch and dinner. That was all I was allowed to have. Then the day before surgery only clear liquids.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
