Issues with Pre-op diet

Recommended Posts

How do you get through this? I feel constant hunger and low energy. I am up at 4am for work and not in bed till 9:30. This is so hard. Only have one week left till surgery.

It is hard. Harder than after surgery I think. After surgery I wasn't hungry at all. Drinking may help to stave off the hunger. Hang in there!

I'm just finishing my first week of pre-op. It is soooooo very hard. I am very hungry also. I had to go to two luncheons this week.. ugh... So hard, but I did it without caving. I am totally committed. My stomach feels so empty! Got on the scale today out of curiosity and I'm down 7 lbs. This is since last Monday. I'm ready for this!!!!

It's hard for sure.. Post Op I wasn't hungry the first 2 weeks.. but now at beginning of 3rd week Im getting hungry. The best advice I can give you is to persevere. You got this ! Think about the success later... I'm down 13 lbs in 13 days already Post-OP.. that's what keeps me going .. I still have 1 more week on liquids.. its killing me but I know if I'm going to be successful that I have to do it by the book.

It sucks, but in retrospect it only feels like forever. I did have tuna twice just because it was so miserable with just liquids. Some pre-ops get one high Protein meal a day - the purpose is to shrink the fatty liver to facilitate lifting it for the surgery and to get the body in fat burning mode rather than carb burning.

I completely understand. I posted a HUNGRY/HANGRY topic last night as this has become so very hard. I know we can get through it, but this is harder than I expected and I've done the pre-op diet before for 13 days....

It is hard trying to go to sleep with true, almost unrelenting hunger pains...and wake up feeling the same. I can deal with them much better throughout the day as I just try to focus on something else.

I haven't had any real desire for sugar free Jello but maybe I need to eat some anyways. I have found, and don't know if there is any science behind it, but warmer things (protein Soups, Protein cocoa) send to content the vast abyss that is my stomach moreso than cold things (protein shakes)...

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
