Started on The Carnivore Diet

Recommended Posts

My husband is diabetic and has chronic pain, so he did a lot of research and decided he wanted to try "The Carnivore Diet" to reduce his A1C/sugar and also reduce his chronic inflammation.

He's been very supportive of my WLS and efforts, so I wanted to support him too, so I'm doing it with him. I started Sunday, he started yesterday.

I'd been in a stall or had somehow ended up in maintenance for the last two months, so I'm willing to try ANYTHING to get the weight loss moving again. I've already lost 3 pounds in 2 days, so that's a good start. I was shocked because I had double the usual number of calories yesterday (1350 instead of 775) but maybe my body was in starvation mode and I needed to up the calories to lose weight.

The "Carnivore" Diet is very similar to Atkins or Keto, but you basically just eat meat and drink Water. It's a zero carb diet.

Now I know that the ultimate answer is "all things in moderation," but I think that for the short-term, like 30 or 60 days, I can do this, maybe lose some weight, support my husband and get healthier.

Glad it’s working for you! I’ll check it out. I know mentally it’s hard to eat more calories than you want but I do think that broke my last stall. That and yoga.

@GradyCat My cousin (not a bariatric patient) has been on the carnivore diet for 3 months. He lost 40 lbs with not a stick of extra exercise. He says he feels great and noticed his energy levels have been way up since starting. He also swears by Bone Broth as a big part of his diet...I sampled some of his stash and it was DELICIOUS, lol.

I know you've been stalling for a while, hope with works out for you :)

@GradyCat Just 'cause I'm curious - If you're eating 0 carbs, are you ever gonna poop? Seems like you need some type of Fiber, just because!

I have not heard of this but I did " paleo " for a month just to try it out and see how easy/hard it was. Lost 25 lbs. The hardest thing is no dairy or grains.. i love bread.. but its something you can look into if the full on carni does not work for you.

My sister is type 1 and does Keto. says its the only thing she tried that keeps her blood sugars from really going wonkey

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
