soccermom2 27 Posted July 6, 2019 I am 11 days post-op. I cannot tolerate Protein substitutes. I’ve tried everything and all of it makes me sick. Even Genepro... I can smell it, taste it, it gives me horrible gas & makes me nauseous.I’ve only averaged around 30g of Protein a day since surgery. Yesterday I had to get IV fluids for dehydration because the protein makes me so sick. I can drink Water just fine until I start trying to get my protein in. Staying hydrated needs to be my priority right now & the protein is affecting my ability to do that.So what are the consequences of not getting enough protein at this point? I’m starting soft foods next week & I feel like it will be easier to get my protein from food as time goes on.Other than the protein issue I’m starting to feel semi-normal again. Most of my pain has subsided & I feel like I have a lot of energy today.
KarenLR75 516 Posted July 6, 2019 Well, I know one consequence of not getting enough Protein is Hair loss. More importantly your body will start taking protein from your muscles which will cause you to feel weaker (and that is NOT where you want your body to take it's 'fuel' from. I don't want to say those things to increase your anxiety though as that is counterproductive. What did your doctor say about the situation? 2 Losingit2018 and Sosewsue61 reacted to this
soccermom2 27 Posted July 6, 2019 Just that I need to get more. My goal is 70-100g per day. Idk how I’m supposed to get it at this point when the supplements make me sick & I can’t eat to get it, though.
2Bsmaller18 436 Posted July 6, 2019 What about Protein Water? It has a dry after taste but over ice it’s ok.

GreenTealael 25,439 Posted July 6, 2019 Yogurt or cottage cheese blended finely 1 soccermom2 reacted to this
Cheeseburgh 3,080 Posted July 6, 2019 I used this almost daily the first few months. It is a small amount and easy to get down. The negative is it is sickly sweet and has an odd texture like thick Syrup. I didn’t have any issues with it. Liqui-Cel 1 soccermom2 reacted to this
justmetj 421 Posted July 6, 2019 This is pretty good and it has no Protein taste
Sosewsue61 3,185 Posted July 6, 2019 Isopure ready-made blue raspberry or punch over ice, it is clear and more tart than most Protein Drinks. Or try thinned Greek yogurt with fairlife milk. And yes, sorry - Hair loss, but it happens to the best of us.... It does grow back. 2 soccermom2 and justmetj reacted to this

I know of plenty of wls patients that can’t tolerate the Protein Shakes but are able to tolerate fairlife milk. This may help you get by until you are able to eat more Protein at which time they won’t want you drinking the shakes most likely anyway. Goid luck and don’t give up. 1 soccermom2 reacted to this
Deemar007 244 Posted July 6, 2019 I loved the BariatricPal hot chocolate with mini marshmallows. I'm not sure if you've tried that one yet. Sometimes, I still have one because it seems like a cheat. I'd drink them all the time if I could, but my Doctor doesn't want me to drink my Protein any longer. Good luck, I hope you find one you can tolerate. 1 soccermom2 reacted to this
soccermom2 27 Posted July 6, 2019 Thank you for your recommendations. I’ve actually been using fair life milk & chocolate milk it just doesn’t seem like I can get to the number of Protein that I need since it’s a smaller amount of protein per serving. As far as hair and muscle loss... is that something that will happen from just one month of not getting enough protein? Once I’m eating solids if I’m able to get enough protein then will I be good or will I have done a lot of damage?
2Bsmaller18 436 Posted July 6, 2019 Can you call the doctor and ask about yogurt? Every doctor has their own protocol but I was able to have yogurt after a few days. I got the high Protein Greek ones with low sugar.
notmyname 593 Posted July 6, 2019 do you like milk? I knew one woman who would have double milk - Milk mixed with milk powder (not Protein Powder, but powdered milk) for extra Protein. It might help some. 2 Losingit2018 and cris20495 reacted to this
