Not sure under what forum this would be under so I just posted to this one since I’m pre op and trying to brainstorm.

So my question is what hobbies do you or have you taken on since being through or on this process?

I’m looking for a new hobby since my old one was baking. I LOVE TO BAKE! But the reason I want to find another and different hobby is because when I bake I tend to eat most of what I bake and give some of it away before I eat it all. I feel like I need to give it up completely because as I’m making what I am making (from scratch) I tend to “taste test it” before putting it in the oven and even after too haha.

Please share some of your hobbies! Thanks

I’m a quilter and bag maker. I am also trying to draw and paint although those skills don’t come naturally. I like shopping, meeting friends for coffee, reading magazines and playing stupid games on my ipad whilst watching TV.

some people take up things like knitting to keep their hands busy. Or anything that gets them out of the house. I try to get out of my house since I'm not as likely to think about food when I"m out and about. When I was stuck in the house this past winter (with the polar vortex), I did jigsaw puzzles (not all the time, of course...but when I needed to keep myself from mindless eating...)

You can bake, just not right away, you can adapt recipes - find new ones with less sugar. But later, much later.

For now - Analyze what pleasure it is baking gives you - the smell, the feel of the dough, the texture, the pride in creating?

Translate this 'feeling' in something else - making jewelry would give you texture and color and gifts to give away. Take a class, or look at youtube. Quilting/sewing might provide the same thing - but requires more time and skills. Candle or soap making would give you fragrance, as would floral decorating. Heck experiment with some, take classes.

Or an entirely new sport - the gym, a bicycle, kayak, swimming, horses, archery, golf, dancing.

I quilt, bead, sew, dance - I did all these before surgery. I bake, but save it for only the best celebrations. I eat high quality food 90% of the time, I am worth it. I am worth scallops, lobster, asparagus, fresh green Beans, the best salad ingredients, a few fresh blackberries, coqau vin, pricey cheese.... no cardboard food

Amen Sosewsue61, you have earned the right to non- cardboard food. You have been to the Mountain, the Mountain of weight loss, with all the loose sliding rockface, the cravasses, the icy footing on the climb, it is time to do the very best you can do for YOU!❤

Oh my gosh thanks! I think for me baking is mainly probably the texture and decorating

My husband and I used to geocache when we dated. I’d like to try that again because it involves hiking. I’d also like to get a bike and start riding. I loved it as a kid! I’m at the beginning of my journey so this is still pipe dream stuff for me!

My inside hobbies are cross stitching, journaling, coloring, painting, and writing letters with my fountain pens.
My outside hobbies are discovering new urban and wooded trails to ride my bike, geocaching, walking thru flea markets, flying kites, camping, and biking thru the woods.
I've always been active, but now that I'm 2 days post-op, I'm super excited to enjoy my hobbies in a healthier body!

All these so much fun! Maybe I’ll buy myself a bike. Sadly at 22 yrs old I never was taught how to ride but want to learn. Maybe once I’m smaller I’ll have the confidence to learn

Bianca

You could now Celebrate Christmas in July and start making gifts for Christmas. Pinterest has all kind of ideals.

Yes, I use to do looming but then the pegs started to bend and break. Maybe I’ll try a different type :).

I have surgery on August 19th :) 45 days away :)

Before you buy one, see if there is a place you can rent one and try it out first. We have a place near where I am and it’s $16 a day. Not bad if you get there at 10 when they open and turn it in right before they close at 6- we ride to downtown and back- 7 miles one way.... mostly flat. Still need to lose weight before I can go again.

I crochet, sew, walk my dog, and have been cooking different recipes that I find on various bariatric blogs to find new things to try. I am allergic to fish and seafood so I hope to find other alternatives that are high in Protein. I never knew there were so many ways to cook chicken lol :-)

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
