Fruit juice-really the enemy?

Recommended Posts

My Nutritionist told me to avoid fruit juice like the plague because it’s full of sugar and may cause dumping. My surgeon told me that during the liquid phase I could have a little fruit juice because I’m not getting many calories elsewhere, and long as my sleeve can tolerate it. Well so far my sleeve has not had a problem with 100% fruit juice! I’m about to start soft food phase so I will have to watch caloric intake of fruit juice. I’m so happy I didn’t experience dumping because I don’t like sugar free drinks! I don’t like artificial sweeteners. I’m hoping a little treat of juice once a day won’t hurt me or am I being a rebel lol?

Juicing is a great lifestyle but by drinking juice you will be consuming (extra) liquid calories which isnt bad if you need extra calories, but right now you probably dont because you (we all are, point of surgery) are trying create a deep caloric deficit to lose weight rapidly.

You may find that juice slows your progress.

Follow your teams directions but since they conflict I personally would blend the approaches and go with very little pure undiluted juice while losing then avoid it when possible if you reach the top end of your caloric intake easily.

I no longer drink juice at all & I have a Juicer

💜Good luck💜

I am presurgery and can honestly attest to the fact that majority of my extra caloric intake is from fruit juice! I have never finished a can of soda in my entire life, I don't drink alcoholic beverages regularly and other than liking baked products, my severe vice is fruit juice as I confess that Water doesn't go down well in my throat especially after I moved to a state that the water is kinda hard no matter if I use water softeners and purifiers. I detest artificial sweeteners as well. So I love my juices.
That said, since starting this process, I've cut out juices (probably the most difficult thing I ever gave up!). I've not made any other severe diet changes (though definitely doing the head work) and I find myself losing a few pounds here and there.

If you are able to keep it at one juice a day, more power to you as that seems manageable (juice was my water previously and I imagine if I even give an inch, I fear I may backslide completely).

My nutritionist recommended HINT water as well as the infusing fruit water bottle thingy and it helped me transition from drinking juice to liking the taste of water and now I drink more water than I previously did, even uninfused [emoji1]

Best of luck in your journey[emoji106]

It’s not surprising that you are not dumping eating sugar. My Dr suggested the sleeve because I am a type one diabetic. Less chances of dumping with the sleeve. My instructions are to drink watered down juice to bring my glucose back up (when they are in the 30 to 60 range on my glucose meter)

All surgeons/dieticians’ plans are different. Juice is not on my plan for weight loss because its empty calories. It’s choice on how you want to fuel your body. Eating/drinking empty calories. or hitting your protein/nutrition goals with the foods you eat/drink or

I can tolerate anything. Just because I can eat/drink it does not mean I have to eat/drink it.

What Protein are you consuming at this point - Greek yogurt, shakes, Bone Broth, etc?

I would dilute that one serving - which a juice serving is 4oz - with Water and ice. The culprit is the acid in juice - you are healing and acid at this point is not good. Plus nutritionally it doesn't have Fiber and raises blood sugar immediately, then can send you crashing really fast. If you think you need 'something' puree a couple strawberries or cantaloupe and add Protein Powder and ice.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
