Hi, there Surgery sibling I am having RNY on the 31st. I had issues on day 3 with liquid diet, but it is getting better, and you are correct keeping busy helps. I'm not paying too much attention to the scale because... I started my journey in October and took a break in Feb. due to a job promotion and new grand daughter and I gained 14 lbs in the 3 months I was on pause from the program, then at the end of last month I broke my foot, so I've been in a boot not getting much exercise. I would just be happy to get back down to my October weight. But I'm still smaller than my highest weight ever so there is that. I am right there with you on the nervousness and excitement. I am sure this week is going to fly bye.
Hi surgery sibling!! I'm so glad your foot did not delay your surgery! My goal during the pre OP diet was to lose 15 lbs, I'm down 10 lbs as of today. I'm now hoping I'll lose a total of 20 lbs before surgery. I've lost a total of 45lbs since January. We seem to have a lot in common, I got a job promotion end of last year and my granddaughter is 9 mos old. I also have a 5 yo grandson that keeps me pretty active. I struggle to keep up with them but I know it will get easier once the excess weight is off. I still cannot believe how close it is to surgery day!! My surgery is at 1pm on the 31st. My preop appt is Wednesday at 4pm. I pray your surgery goes well and you have a speedy recovery!!

I just got changed into my gown and sitting in the bed waiting for IV to come. I wasn't too nervous until now. I'm a little more nervous trying to keep my cool! See y'all on the other side!

I am HOME!! I had my VSG on Mon 7/22. My surgery started just past 9:30am. I was #2 on that days schedule. There were 4 scheduled that day.My Mom & sister were there for support. The supporting staff were amazing. They explained everything that would be going on. In recovery, my family was shown in. They then followed as I was brought to my room. Once I was settled in, they went home at about 2pm. I spent the rest of the day getting my BP taken, being checked on for pain. One concern was my O2 levels. They want it to be around 95 - mine was in the low 90s... high 80s. This actually didn't surprise me. That's always been an issue . They decided to put me on a HPAP machine which is similar to a CPAP. UGH!!! What a nightmare! They moved me to a private room so it wouldn't disturb my roommate. They had me walk about 10pm. Walking is difficult for me due to a bad hip. Luckily, I wasn't having a problem with gas. In fact, I didn't have any of the issues described by many people who have undergone the same procedure. They told me I'd be going for x-rays at about 10:30 or so. I alerted my family & asked them to stop by the pharmacy to pick up the meds that were called in the day before. Mom & sister came at about 1pm, fully expecting me to be dressed & ready to go. NOPE- I hadn't been to the x-ray yet!! They came for me shortly after. I have heard of people having difficulty drinking the barium liquid. No big deal for me. When I got back to my room, I was brought 3 one oz "shots" of Snapple diet iced tea & a small bowl of chicken broth. Then an 8oz cup of ice Water. I was able to consume them with no problem. The next thing I knew- they told me to get dressed & the nurse would come in with my instructions. So at 3pm I had my marching orders. We were all laughing & had a great time. My sister joked that the best thing about having anything done at the hospital, is getting another pair of socks! LOL! Jennifer (the nurse) said, "Hang on a sec!" She came back with 2 pair of socks (grey & yellow) for the 3 of us!! She was amazed that was recovering so well. In fact, all of that day's surgeries went off without a hitch & all 4 of us had no problems! I have some soreness, but no real pain. I was home at about 4:30. All is well!

Well, tomorrow at 7 am is the "big day". I'm a bit disappointed that none of my family has come home before now (it's 9:33 PM) as I have to be at the hospital by 5 AM. :( :(

My eldest daughter flies back to PA tomorrow (mid-day) and originally she was coming with my husband & I to the hospital and then hopefully I would get to recovery before he had to drive her to the airport.

Youngest daughter was going to join us @ the hospital closer to my surgery time.

My husband called and announced that they have made things "much easier" (not his specific wording but the gist)..and that youngest daughter is going to pick up eldest and drive her to the airport so "they don't have to get up so early" and then..after youngest has dropped her off..she will stop by on her way to work.

I am realizing now I'm actually VERY hurt by this. When my parents were alive, we made sure for any major surgery to be there with them no matter WHAT time the surgery was. To make sure we could see them before they went back.

I am...stunningly hurt by this and I'm just now realizing it. My husband and eldest are out drinking beer..they said they'd be home early..but it's almost 10 PM and I need to be up by at least 4:15 AM.

I have been patient and understanding and ALONE most nights as everyone goes and does the usual 'food socialization'. My eldest doesn't get good Tex-Mex where she lives so this was a long standing tradition. I HONESTLY don't begrudge them that..but what is a SCARY and very important day for me...it's like my husband is only showing up as he HAS to be there.

I don't understand my kids..I really don't. You could not have paid me any amount of money to not be by my parent's side...both of them. And I always was.

I don't even have my parents left to be there with me..I know many do not. But I am very disappointed and I feel very very alone.

Sorry, am not handling this well. To everyone else still upcoming in Week 4, I wish all of you the very best!

You're in my prayers. Good luck. It certainly is a big step, and since you're the one taking the plunge and not them, they don't share your same mentality. It takes time and at first will be very frustrating. Stay calm as best you can. You'll get used to it and hopefully your family will also come to grips with your surgery and fall right into line. It will be at least a full year before you are able to get to a normal diet. Good luck again.

Karen, ((((HUGS)))) to you!! You are a fantastic mom, wife and daughter to your parents and I totally understand your being hurt. But I honestly think they do not understand the full import of your surgery tomorrow as they think it is "elective bariatic" surgery and not due to what they consider life threatening otherwise, I bet they would move heaven and earth to be with you (for instance if it was heart or kidney surgery). Except one is going through it, I don't think they get it. And because you seem like a mom that makes everyone's life easy, I bet you have not been dramatic about the surgery and so they just assumed you are "cool" with it.

You are hurt, but your hubs and children love you enormously, they just are not in your mind set. It could be worse, imagine if they were the the opposite i.e, all up in your pre-op diet, telling you what to eat or drink, being extremely scared for your and the impending surgery and trying to dissuade you from going through with it and turning tonight into a vigil of fear😨

Not to say there's no happy medium of support, but that human response and behavior can be so varied!

Good luck and Godspeed tomorrow. Just imagine by this time tomorrow, you are on the other side. Praying for speedy recovery for you!!! :1007_hearts:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
