Dieting like a dragon

Recommended Posts

My daughter wants a bearded dragon as a pet. I've been doing a lot of research on them and it amuses me the similarities between these cute little lizards and myself.

Their diet should consist of high Protein insects and a variety of dark greens.

Okay okay so I'm not eating crickets and roaches...

But things like worms are too high in fat to get daily and should be special treats. They're like cheeseburgers for your dragon.

Veggies should be all the good dark green leafies and not iceberg lettuce. Many dragons don't actually like their veggies but its important part of their diet to stay healthy. Dragons have differing taste buds and you have to give your dragon a variety of veggies to find the ones he prefers and will eat.

fruit can be given too, but only in small amounts. They are also treats.

Here's the real kicker though: bearded dragons need daily Calcium supplements or else they get Metabolic Bone Disease. Their bones become brittle, soft and break. They can lose their teeth and spines become malformed.

They can be pretty darn cute! (Also something I have in common with them. )

Onxy is 8 months and Boxcar is 11 months. Ovando 2 years (beardie). They are so funny and full of personality. I found Onxy in the tank with Ovando sleep one afternoon.[emoji23]

Hey , you know spinach has Iron but I'm pretty sure it also has Calcium. And small tender spinach leaves taste pretty goid, or they did back when I could handle salads!

Spinach is actually one of the green leafies that dragons cant have in large amounts.

Its never been one of my favorites. The only way I can tolerate it is at the Indian resturants when I order Saag - which is one of my favorite Indian dishes!

Well doggone, it seemed a good idea at the time! No I wouldn't want such a cute dude getting sick. The more I look at him, the cuter he gets, I just might demand visiting rights if I lived closer!

The same sorts of principles apply to possums in their diet, but scaled up. chicken (including bones), eggs, veggies, some fruit (not too much), and Calcium supplements. Maybe an occasional whole dead mouse if you can get one.

Of course, it’s all raw. But, I’m sure it would be just fine! Nothing tastes as good as thin feels, amirite?!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
