Gastric sleeve and Herniated discs

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if the gastric sleeve surgery causes back pain. I have a lot of back pain and they found two herniated discs, can give an explanation on this? Is this pain common?

No I doubt it, but with weight loss Your CENTER of BALANCE does change, maybe that could put extra strain on your spine and that made them herniate. My bottom thought- you are now being closer watched health-wise and it was noticed sooner.
This is what I keep telling me as my specialists and PCP keep finding things, hopefully in early enough stages they can be taken of. I think every test recently " Oh by the way, did you know you had____?" and I'm going Hunnh? Oh well, it is what it is and I'm going along for the Ride Through Life!

I have some new back pain after my sleeve (started about 5-6 months out. Surgeon and physical therapist said it was because my posture was radically changing because of how I carry my body and my muscles aren't used to it. Hoping PT will help, but it hasn't so far. But nothing like herniated discs for me (or at least they don't think so - no X-rays yet).

Bet you may still find some, all the weight we once carried will and did take a toll. And like a lot of other things in our life, the note just fell due, and it may hurt to pay!

As we age, we all get degenerative disc disease. Add the morbid obesity factor and our backs "age faster" than someone who is not obese.

I doubt that the procedure caused a herniated disc. Herniated disc usually requires an event: "I turned wrong and my back popped" "I lifted X and my back popped" "I slipped and fell". I also agree with the others above. As we lose weight, our posture and our balance changes because we're no longer accommodating the same body mass. That will irritate the normal degeneration in your back.
