Hi Sara21, I too, am a newbie (but an oldie). I've been reading this forum for the past month searching for info. The decision is finally made to have the surgery. My husband and I will go to Mexico for it. He has a ton of health problems that necessitate the surgery, but our insurance wants him to jump through hoops for a long time before they say IF it can be authorized. Me, I've been overweight since birth! Also with health issues, but nothing as life threatening as my husbands.

Glad to be joining such a strong community as this forum.

But i had a question and i was qondering if ity was just me when anyone spoke to there doctor and he told you what steps to take was his man chat nothing more than a put down. he made me feel like i was worthless and not worthy of being a person because i was a big person . he told me that after the surgery i would look like a victoria supermodel never once did he say anything about me being healthy i am doing this surgery to be healthy and not to be a skinny supermodel now i am deeply depressed about doing this surgery please shed some light on what i should do. he is an awesome surgeon and has won numerous awards but his bedside personality is no joke

I have to be honest here. If a doctor is going to upset and depress you to this point merely by suggesting that you will look better after surgery, are you sure you are ready for surgery?

I don't think any of us are in this to be skinny super models but quite frankly, many of us are in this to look better. Some are in it for appearance, some for health, some for necessity.

Before surgery we all have a lot of doubts and wonder if this is right for us. That's normal. Others are looking for a reason to put it off. I'm not suggesting you are one of these people, I don't know one way or another.

But if something like that is going to depress you to this degree you better get ready for a WHOLE lot more of it after you have surgery. People you haven't spoken to in years will be making comments.

What your doc said was probably meant to be supportive. If you can't handle that you won't be able to come close to handling the negative comments after surgery such as:

How much do you weigh now?

How much did you weigh at your fattest?

Why aren't you losing faster?

Why did you take the "easy" way out? (Easy my butt!)

Most try to be quite supportive but some people are just stupid. If your doc suggesting that you will look better after surgery is going to depress you, perhaps you need to reconsider if you have what it takes to do this.

Sorry, just some old timer tough love here.

Hi sweetmo:

How much research have you done on this doctor? If he's just concentrating on the cosmetic aspects of weight loss, he might be one of the "weekend seminar" doctors who are only in it for a quick buck. Try posting a request on the Doctors and Hospitals forum http://www.lapbandtalk.com/f11/ to see if anyone else has had any experience with you doctor.

Good luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
