Exercising after the sleeve...

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery 6 days ago and I feel GREAT. I've only lost 8-9 lbs since surgery though. I feel like this is low compared to the other stories I read. Prior to surgery, I was walking 3-4 miles every day and using the elliptical. I know my body is not ready for the elliptical yet but when can I start back on my outdoor walks? I typically walk my neighborhood which has lots of grades and one good size hill. My goal is to find a personal trainer when I am able to get to the gym but for now I must rely on myself. I just feel so good that I want to start now, even though I know that is a horrible idea. I may feel great but my insides aren't healed yet. Kind of like how I really want that egg salad that I prepped for my puree stage today instead of waiting until tomorrow! LOL.

Tell me when you started back to exercising post-op. Thanks in advance!!!!

Congratulations on your successful surgery! I started walking in my neighborhood one week after surgery. On my 3rd week i started exercising using YouTube videos. Cleared to use gym after 6 weeks. My HMLA papers had a section to be filled by surgeon which states i need this time for recovery from surgery. And NAMES this surgery as laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy! However this information is considered PHI and protected by HIPAA. Thus your HR required to keep it confidential.

walking I could do right away - in fact, I was encouraged to do so. Other exercises I had to wait about a month on - strength training they said to wait even longer than a month (may have been eight weeks for that, I'm not sure)

8-9 lbs the first week is great. You are not "My 600 lb Life", so do not expect to lose as much as quickly as they do. The average range for weight loss for the first month seems to be about 15-25 lbs for us more "normal" bariatric patients, so you are just fine. I lost 16 lbs that whole first month, and I started off at over 300 lbs.

You can definitely start walking outdoors or on the treadmill. I tried the elliptical machine around the first ir 2nd week, but I didn't have the strength so I stuck with the threadmill. I started spinning around the 4th week.

8-9 lbs in 6 days is great. I also agree with catwoman 15-25lbs is average so prepare yourself for that. Everyone loose at different rate.

You can walk now. You can do cardio in two weeks. You can do weight lifting in 6 weeks (nothing more than 10 pounds until then)

I could do low impact walking right away (it helps keep away the blood clots!) then about 6 weeks post op I was able to start going to they gym for other work outs.

Am I the only one that was put on blood thinner shots post-op for like 3 weeks? ..... I know I can walk.... I'm just saying. I am ready to do more than just a short breeze up the road.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
