Thanksgiving

Recommended Posts

This week is thanksgiving and if you are anything like me, you are planning your thanksgiving eating plans now. What you will eat, what you are willing to pass up. There are things I gotta have and there are things that are not worth filling up my little belly. How am I gonna get through this holiday of feast, with determination. I am determined not to be that person laying on the floor or sofa writhing in pain because they are too full. We all know that feeling and that was a feeling I would not wish on my worst enemy. In the past, I would have my elastic waist pants ready so that I did not even have to bother with unbuttoning them. What a shame!! Why do we focus so much on the food for thanksgiving and for our family Christmas and Easter too? Shouldn't it be about the family you have not seen or talked to in awhile? Shouldn't it be about supporting each other and being there for one another? Spending time with each other and laughing and being happy. Where did all that go? For me, thanksgiving became a monster of how much I can put on my plate, how fast I could eat it and get up and get seconds. Just typing this I am shaking my head. This year, I am going to focus on my family, spend time with my daughter, and not worry about who is going to get the last helping of dressing out the turkey. Cuz back in the day, I would have cursed you out and maybe fought you over that.

Q. How have your holidays changed since WLS?

i know this is weird, but since my surgery i have been craving pumpkin like crazy..thankfully it is the perfect time of year. so, if i have nothing else i will have pumpkin pie. i know, this is no good, but i believe we crave things for a reason, and darn it, i've been wanting pumpkin for over 4 weeks now, so pumpkin pie HERE I COME.... (i will probably not eat anything else, i know pumpkin seeds have a lot of Protein, but what abou the actual pumpkin??)

Ha! I laughed at us discussing the Protein in pumpkin. I am sure there is protein- but a whole lot of yummy unhealthyness too. But I admit- I am going to eat a little pumpkin pie. I will have a little sliver of it, but I will save it for later that night. Because at the actual dinner I am going to have one tiny piece of turkey with gravy so I hope it won't be too dry. I also want a little tsp. of broccoli cheese casserole and a tiny amount of yams. I am going to pass on the stuffing, rolls, potatoes, etc. But I am going to enjoy a few bites of my favorites on Thanksgiving. If we eat healthy most all the time, I think it is okay to have a few bites of our favorites on special occasions as long as not most of the time.

Who cares about healthy - I want sweet potato pie and broccoli cheese casserole... those are the only things I want. OH and deviled eggs... yummmmm.... my favorites...

I hate turkey so I am good there... but the broccoli cheese casserole is all mine (they make me my own... LOL )

CAN'T WAIT!!!!!

I live in Canada, but I am an American. I Celebrate Thanksgiving twice- once in October with the Canadians and then again with the Americans too. Except in October this year I was sucking down Water and Protein mix, because Thanksgiving was five days after surgery. I digress....

I am soooo lucky I do not have a sweet tooth. (Before my surgery ALL of my teeth craved sugar. Now everything is too sweet.) I won't be eating pie, but I will be eating turkey and gravy. I love that stuff. I am not worried about Portion Control, as my little band friend does it all for me! I just eat and it tells me when to stop. No thinking involved. I just have to make good food choices. Oh yeah I am totally going to get in on the mash potatoes. Yes!

Hi Amy, I also live in Canada. I usually Celebrate twice too!!! I missed out on our Thanksgiving, surgery was a few days later and I was in the States. Now I am missing the American Holiday cause I am back in Canada. ARGH!! Saved by holidays on different days...lol Christmas is gonna be the tough one for me. I will not give up my honey baked spiral sliced ham and honey baked turkey...........Everything else I can live without....

i am choosing pumpkin pie because, i don't like turkey (it is too dry, but i like lunchmeat), sweet potatoe casserole, green bean casserole, cranberry relish or jelly, dressing, giblet gravy, pea salad, or many of the other traditional items.

i guess i am a picky eater...lol. my mom usually makes stovetop for me as that is the only dressing i like (i guess i'm still young enough to be slightly spoiled).

i will eat mashed potatoes, maybe, and i may try some corn.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. Yesterday I had a small slice of ham, a small serving of pinto Beans, a small serving of greens , a small serving of dressing that mom made, and a small slice of Peanut Butter pie. I gave the ham away. I ate the dressing, God Bless Mom, no one makes dressing like her, I ate the greens and half the pie.

my mom's dressing was AWESOME this year. and i couldn't get enough of the sweet potatoes. and the turkey was slow smoked for 24 hours prior to eating, and the dark meat was so juicy and gooooooodddd. so, i just thought i didn't like thanksgiving dinner, man, i can't wait until next year. :D i had cheesecake, too!

now, the next big one will be new year's day, when we have greens, cabbage, black eyed peas, fried hog jowl/salt meat, fried potatoes, macoroni and cheese, green Beans, and sweet corn bread...that will be a hard one, i have my third fill the following day. (for christmas we have homeade lasagna and cesear salad).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
