Drinking before and after eating

Recommended Posts

I’ve read all kinds of different things regarding how long to wait to drink Water before and after eating.. I have been doing half an hour but today I saw something that said one hour. It’s so rough! What does everyone here do?

I wait at least 1/2 after eating to drink. I use the Baritastic app and it has a timer that notifies you when you can drink.

I find this odd also. My surgical team says to wait only 45 seconds between a bite of food and drinking something. I only heard about the half hour rule on this site.

I was told by my team half an hour at least before or after. This has been the hardest for me, I am 1 yr 3 Mo since surgery. Especially if its very salty. My Nutritionist suggested asking for a half cup of ice cubes. If I really feel the urge I will request ice, I love the stares from people, and take a cube if I really need to. Luckily it has gotten easier and I don't request it as often.

Drinking while eating is a big no-no. For several reasons. It can flush the food out of your pouch too quickly causing you to eat too much. And for RNY patients it can even lead to dumping syndrome. Do some research on the Internet and you'll find lots of support for waiting to drink after eating.

One of the hardest things for me to relearn . In the OLD DAYS I always had a nice glass of Ice Water with my meals, partially for lubrication but also because I have more than a touch of Asthma and constant coughing during resturant meals Does Not earn you a Diner of the Year award.
Oh I do follow the rules, with the trials I have had, I simply must, but it still feels like wearing spike heels on Hocky Ice, very scary and. you fear falling!

This is the same for me. My nutritionist told me that she had just learned that you can drink right before eating, it's the afterwards where you have to wait so that you aren't automatically flushing out the food you just ate. I wait 30 minutes after eating, but I do have a sip or two while eating if I get something spicy or need to wash out an after taste from my meal.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
