Remind yourself that "you know what that tastes like" or a mind trick I like to play is picturing the food being sneezed on or made with dirty hands or dropped on a gas station bathroom floor. Keep your focus. Take healthy Snacks with you to those parties if they are something you MUST attend.

It comes and goes.. recently I went to a fund raiser and could only eat salad with no dressing... I was so crabby , next time I’ll bring what I can eat even if it’s just for me..these changes can make us feel resentful but I look at it this way.. at 55 I hit my quota on bad food like 20 years ago.Eating that food brought me to the most unhealthy place I could be and I view the stuff I can’t have like drugs or alcohol to other addicts and I focus on the people around me and not the food I don’t get to eat!

It's an evolution. I do IF. Because of that, if I "miss my meal" it's no big deal. If a social function doesn't have something I can eat, then it's very simple. No angst. No pangs. No regrets. No sadness. Food is just food. I go home and eat a normal meal or snack that's on my plan. Instead I just enjoy the social aspect of it and visit and meet new people.

This was key for me. My mindset changed early on that parties/get-togethers were about the company and not about eating the food.

I'm learning that I don't HAVE to eat it just because it's there.

Isn't that the hardest part. We're so conditioned that it's rude or uncouth to not eat at a social function... But we really don't have to.

No it's not. Naturally thin women have been doing it forever. :) They were actually taught to "eat" before the party so you don't look like "pig" at the party. At least in the South, our mamas taught us that...

And a fair amount of Midwestern Mama's did too. Along with not demanding a drink when visiting relatives and friends, it's tacky and pushy! Thanks Fluffy Chix for bringing that to mind!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
