Sense of smell heightened

Recommended Posts

Has anyone else had this experience? I’m two weeks post op and have noticed what I guess is my own smell of ketosis which is really icky but omg. I was in the grocery today and passed a guy in the produce department and nearly threw up. He reeked of something so offensive I thought I would gag. Then a woman with perfume on. Then today, my son breathed on me after he had spaghetti and I almost threw up. That’s the smell that nearly made me crazy in the store. It was garlic. But it was beyond gross. Like the strongest most rancid smell I’ve ever smelled. And the other day my MIL smelled like rancid onion. After several incidents, i don’t think it’s these people as much as it is me. Did anyone else develop the smell of a bloodhound? This is worse than when I was pregnant🤢🤮

Yes!!!!! I was just talking to my husband about this. I am also 2 weeks out of surgery today.

I stayed in the car while Hubs went into a local gas/fast food place to get something to drink. When he got back into the car all I could smell was the greasy fast food ON HIM. He didn't eat or even touch anything in the 4 minutes he was there, but I would have sworn he brought some food with him. So gross!!!!

At the grocery store I walked in through the front doors, stopped and told my husband I smell peppers really strongly. He didn't smell anything and neither could our teen son. As we got to the very back of the store they had a sample vegetable dip they were giving out to people with- slices of pepper to dip it with.

I also agree about the garlic, which I normally LOVE. I keep smelling it on everyone....

Maybe it's our new superpower?

I am exactly the same!!! My poor husband is dealing with my constant comments on his breath.. LOL! Even after mouthwash, I still am bothered by it.

Oh I’m so glad I’m not crazy. The garlic is literally putrid. I don’t know how long I am going to be like this or if it gets better but I .will be sad if I can’t ever eat or be around garlic again! Lol

Yes , yes and yes... we have lots of elderly clients at my job and for the most part they are well groomed , well coifed little darlings... but then there are a few who smell like rancid depends and Avon’s honeysuckle and I am literally 🤢🤢🤢🤢But , I also appreciate some smells more.. oranges , since my acid reflux has been healed by my RNY I can eat oranges... I squeeze the skin to smell the Orange essence... love it.. maybe I’ll keep some at work for under my nose 🥴

Ok so I thought I had a strong sniffer but this is on a whole new level. Like burying my face in an armpit strong. 🤢🤮😆Sorry for being so graphic but just being honest. I’ve never been so offended by smells in my life.

Right after surgery, most of the people around me smelled like corn! I don't know what that was about but it passed. A lot of smells still bother me that never did before. I am 10 weeks post-op.

🌽 now that is a new one😂I’m not even sure I would know what corn smelled like unless you mean like a corn chip, Frito-ish kind of smell😆

Yes, I think so too. My dentist evidently had a garlic or onion bagel the other day for Breakfast and while he was working on me I thought I was going to die.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
