Flying so soon after surgery!

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys!! I'm new to this forum but all of the information I have read so far is helping to mentally prepare myself for this surgery. My Gastric Sleeve Surgery is scheduled for August 29th in Juarez, Mexico. I have my fiance going with me to help along the way but I'm REALLY nervous about the flight heading back home. My surgery is scheduled for Friday morning and we fly back to Louisiana Sunday around lunch time. I'm worried about the discomfort of sitting upright in the seat for such a long flight. Does anyone have any tips or tricks that worked for you? On top of flying so soon after the surgery, there wasn't a non stop flight option. We have a layover----The thought of getting up and down, up and down has me worried!! 😕

As much as getting up and down is a pain in the butt, you should do it anyways.

Also, I'm not sure who you are flying, but you can upgrade on Alaska Air for $50. I always make sure I get right on there 24 hours before boarding when you do your check in and it gives me the option. The extra leg room would be of benefit to extend your legs out and squeeze your calves. Try and get the front row as there is the most room.

Congrats on your upcoming surgery!

for me, sitting or standing or lying down was fine - little to no pain. It was transitioning from one to the other that was hard. But as the above poster said, you have to do it anyway, so...

Hi! I am looking through threads and saw this. I will be flying to Denver for my surgery and about 4 days after I will be flying back home to the west coast. How did your flight go? Did you have any issues?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
