hernia development

Recommended Posts

I went to my doctor as I had severe pain and heart burn and I couldn't drink Water and He told me that I developed a hiatal hernia and revision surgery to bypass will treat the hernia but I'm afraid from second surgery two surgeries in less than two years is so tough and dangerous are there another options ?

I doubt it, but then I always thought I could control my Weight without surgery and we all know how well that worked. So I can be wrong at times.LOL😛

I would get a second (and even third,) opinion on any kind of revision surgery. Partly due to the added complication in doing revisions, and in the wider range of underlying problems that may create the need for a revision. Different doctors have different experiences (even if they are equally "experienced") which can give them a different perspective in solving a problem.

On these forums, we certainly see some come through who have hiatal hernias repaired post sleeve; there is also wide variation with amount of sleeve experience that surgeons can have, given that it has been gaining popularity rapidly, so many surgeons are not as experienced with sleeves as they are bypasses. This leaves many in the situation of not really knowing how to correct a problem that occurs with a sleeve, and instead stay within their comfort zone and revise to a bypass instead of fixing it.

So, in short, you may be in a situation where some surgeons can correct the hernia fairly easily while others would have difficulty, or it may be something that no one can correct without doing the revision. We forum lackeys can't make that judgement, but that is what second opinions are for.

Good luck,

I’m having the bypass done due to reflux/GERD and hiatal hernia. After I got my sleeve I started getting severe heart burn and ended up with 4 ulcers in my esophagus. So I decided on the surgery.

I had the same thing. I was constantly throwing up due to the hernia. My surgeon just corrected the hernia and made the diaphragm hole smaller without a bypass revision. . My problem now is that I’m struggling with that stuck feeling and feeling a bit nauseous. My surgery was just 2 weeks ago, so still figuring it all out

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
