What can you tolerate and when

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I had a GLP to RNY on 5/23 I still cant move past liquids. The best I can go is cream Soups maybe 5 sips. I tried cottage cheese and wow cramping for hours. I tried blended tuna and vomited. Anyone else moving forward post-op this slow. Also I am up and about never had any issues moving but within a few hours I am bloated and my stomach is so tight. TIA for your experiences

I am in my sixth weeks after sleeve and my meals includes, yogurt, bean Soup with vegetables, eggs and Protein Shakes. I had a little chicken yesterday and it felt stuck, so I am crossing off chicken for now. I stopped eating cheese because it was causing Constipation and plus high in fat.

It't looks like your tiny stomach is telling you what it likes for now. Continue with sipping the Soups, and drink Protein shakes if you can until you can tolerate other food. Don't force it.

Good luck!

I don't know what a GLP is, but generally with any of these procedures there can be a wide variation between patients as to how rapidly one can progress through liquids into thicker and more solid foods, as well as tolerating different individual foods. A key factor is the amount of inflammation one gets in the stomach and other surgical areas. Liquids may pass through very slowly (thus the usual advice to sip, sip, sip our liquids constantly) if things are swollen inside, or they may pass with little restriction if not. Likewise with the ability to progress on to thicker liquids and purees. I had no problem with thicker and soft things like yogurt or eggs even the first week (yes, that was on our program), but my wife was much slower to progress through those things.

It's a big YMMV thing and we all have to go at our own pace

I can tolerate Real Good food chicken crust pepperoni pizza, but for some reason, the uncured bacon one of the same brand causes issues for my stomach, as I discovered yesterday.

Well yesterday I took a can of beef- I liken to the cold- packed beef of my childhood. Since it is processed with only sea salt I added a salt-free beef broth and heated it in my crock pot. Now after a period of time it is so tender I can chew it down with my dentures to fine enough a pulp that my tempermental RNY pouch will accept it. Don't ever believe dentures are equivalent to natural teeth, like many other repkacements, especially joints they have only a 85% efficiency rating. And FYI tomorrow morning. I undergo my 12th or 13th Endoscopy to determine why my pouch is still giving me difficulties after an nine- month duration. Until this is rectified I am still on thin puree, Soup, broth, and Protein Shake as these are the things which do not cause emesis, my Bariatric Center calls this a Modified Level 2 Diet Plan, on which I have lost 120 pounds since Surgery Day(5th September 2018). So wish my endiscopist and I Good Luck and maybe this. "retardation of diet "will be done!

I had Gastric Band removed then RNY on May8/19 was exclusive to pureed on week 3 & 4 then started other soft foods....Chew chew chew chew chew....if you are vomiting then it's your body saying "we had enough" or "we are not ready" for that yet. It is early days so we need to be patient....I got excited about having eggs and meat .....boy was I mistaken .... Now I experiencing gallbladder issues....the dietitian and other support staff tell us to avoid over doing things like eating too much too soon or physical activities for a reason. I am reminded to be more patient with myself and ask for help when I feel any type of discomfort
Please take care and best wishes [emoji120]

Thank you all for your answers. They did an UGI and SBFT to look for issues and you are all right everything is just so swollen still. So now Omeprazole and zantac twice a day each. If not improved in a few weeks then a scope. But you made me feel better I am not crazy not able to advance off of fluids.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
