Another article has just been publish linking the use of heartburn prescriptions to cancer and kidney disease.

I take this medication daily for the past eight years.
Anyone else concerned?

I’m very concerned. I’ve been taking for almost three years and haven’t followed up with doc in a while. I really need them but so scared to see if I’m helping or hurting myself. Let’s keep each other up to date I’m calling doctor his week!

Another article but they're still citing the same study. No idea how flawed or not flawed that study is though.

Yes, of course. I wonder how long it takes to get back to some baseline risk level.

I'm glad that I don't take it anymore. Now that I've been sleeved I don't have GERD/Acid Reflux anymore.

they've moved some long-term users over to H2 blockers like prescription Zantac - although they don't work for everyone (they do for some, though). It's a real problem - PPI's worked very well for most people.

I saw a Bariatric doctor last year and he said if I converted to a mini gastric bypass I would no longer have to take them as acid issue would be fixed. Have you heard this?

I have read that the risk of reflux with a mini bypass is still relatively high, generally RNY is recommended for reflux a,though sometimes even that doesn’t work

Depends. I was told that there would be an 80% chance that I wouldn't need reflux meds anymore. I wasn't one of the 80%.

Only recently though when I quit all dairy I was able to wean myself off the PPI. I'm without them since a few days and I hope that the last remaining symptoms I sometimes have at night will either go away completely (the proton pumps need some adjustment time after all) or that at least I won't have esophagitis in the next EGD.

Regarding the MGB vs. RNY - usually an RNY is the surgery to go for. However, I was revised into an MGB Dr. Rutledge performs with the option to revise to RNY later if necessary (there was a specific reason for this decision so no discussions on how much sense that might make or not). I also had a hernia that was closed.

Rutledge has some information regarding MGB and reflux on youtube if you're interested.

In sum the surgery is no guarantee that you can stop taking reflux medication. There might also be a hernia and some food sensitivities contributing to the reflux problem.

I don’t suffer with it but was told I have to take them for life , as any acid would eventually cause little ulcers in the stomach at the site where it was cut

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
