Looking for some help and advice on a few things. Looks like am will be getting approved for surgery in late July 2019.

I have lost 30+ pounds but I feel like the closer I get to that time the more depressed and anxious I am. Also, despite losing some of this weight I am very self-conscious right now. I don't feel like I am in a great place but I am hinging a lot on the long term of feeling better and being able to do more.

The transition to healthier food hasn't been bad for me, but I am often hungry. I am not a binge eater but I have a healthy appetite and quit when I feel full (problem is getting to full!)

I also don't have many friends and I have been very guarded with the information about having this done. My parents and mother-in-law know that I am getting something done to fix my GERD problems but they don't know what. I really don't want to tell anyone at all. I have been eating healthy so people are already seeing my weight changes, I just want to go with that and not make a scene (I have a weird personality, I like being social and I am funny but I also often times like blending in).

Anyway, just curious for some advice. Also, struggling with some ideas post op, I don't really like eggs, cottage cheese or seafood so I am a little worried. Have found that I enjoy the flavored tuna packets, cheeses, lunchmeats and some veggies which my nutritionist said could sub out for some of those things I don't enjoy eating.

Congratulations on your journey as it seems you are already off to a good start. Don't worry about making your journey public as many of us here have chosen to keep our decision personal. Like you I don't eat cottage cheese or seafood but I find yogurt and different types of bean Soups work for me. Don't stack up on to many food because your taste and craving will change after the surgery. Many also depend on Protein Shakes and powder as a good source of Protein post-op.

Wishing you the best on your journey!

I haven't told anyone about my WLS and I'm six months post-op. If someone mention that I look like I've lost weight and asks about it, I just say, "Diet and exercise" (which is TRUE!). I don't like most food at all. I never have. My weight was mostly due to eating tons of Cookies and chocolate. I like very few foods. So now I mostly drink Protein Shakes and eat deli ham and cheese most days.

I understand where you are at. I’m scheduled for 10/1 and have been riding the teeter totter the last month or so. One day I feel surgery is right, the next day I’m in doubt. I know that surgery “is” the right decision. However, I do think doubt is part of a healthy decision making process. I have only discussed my surgery with my husband. Keeping your decision private may be the best thing for you.

Thank you all for the thoughts and kindness. I didn't realize so many people had been in similar situations as I am in!

I can understand your concerns. We all have something we worry about. My biggest worry is being overnight at the hospital without my husband and dogs. Oh and I am fearful of getting an IV, people seeing me naked when I am asleep/under and worried that I won't be able to shower for 2 days.

All minor, but that said, we all have a thing or 2 that does bother you! I thought they might laugh at me being so old, I missed my cats because my son basically "roomed in" with me, but my biggest? That my surgeon would change his mind at the last minute and WOULD NOT perform my surgery. And to me that was a date 10 times worse than death. And no, I never feared dying on the table, which at 72 I easily could have. I knew my surgeon would not let THAT happen, it would ruin his Perfect Record as well as screw up my life as well as my son's. And he also believed implictedly in Dr Needleman, so much that he is considering Bariatric Surgery for himself!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
