Oh boy, FIRST bad cold post surgery!

Recommended Posts

While it is already the Dog Days of summer here... I've caught a brutal cold that hubby brought home from his workplace last week. I am five months out and thankfully, did not contact the flu or any other illness until now. This cold has hit like a vengeance! Funniest thing. It feels very different than colds in the past. Does anyone have any remedies or tips that helped them through? I have continued to drink Water and hot tea allotments, however any food just irritates the very raw throat with tummy upset. Previously, it was said: Feed a cold, Starve a fever. Remember?! And, OH boy, would I ever feed + comfort myself (Ahhhh...) with Stouffers macaroni and cheese (YUM!), Haagen Dazs coffee and chocolate ice cream flavors (Heavenly!) and home made chicken noodle soup (Soothing!) Did not find the Soup that helpful this time around, separating out chicken and veggies (no noodles) for just the broth. The liquid and solid thing rule, as you all know. I am behaving myself and staying right on plan, but stumbled upon this new insight with my first cold sleeved - How being sick was just another opportunity to indulge myself. So with the Ahhhh, Yum, Heavenly and Soothing now taken out of this equation, any suggestions!? :[

I had a very bad cold a couple of days after my surgery, and the coughing was painful. I called my surgeon and they recommended over the counter cough medicine. I also sipped on fresh ginger and mint tea.

Hope you fee better soon.

SusieQ2019 - I can't imagine how painful coughing was for your esophagus and new tender pouch! Ouch. Coughing and nasal drip has irritated sleeve causing nausea. I tried cough Syrup and it came back up. I'm not tolerating cold meds well at all. Strange. I guess it's the nature of the new beast.

That said, will definitely try your fresh ginger and mint tea suggestions tonight. Thank you for your well wishes.

That's right where I'm at today. Coughing hurts so much. I was doing really well until this cold hit.

The only thing that's saved me has been Ricola no sugar added menthol cough drops.

Oh Mrs. Gamgee, do feel better soon. Having a cold at this early juncture must be so uncomfortable! Are you on soft foods? Do keep well... your 52 pound loss is fabulous, too! This is just a hiccup in the journey downward. ;]

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
