Hi,

I am 3 1/2 weeks post OP and am battling with heartburn, especially at night. I get it when I eat and when I don't eat...

I told my surgeon at my 2 week postbox visit and he said to try one of the OTC meds but I'm not getting any relief. I've already doubled the dosage (checked dosages for prescription strength first) but it's barely touching it.

Is this normal?

Yes, I think it's pretty normal. Most people are prescribed a PPI post op (my surgeon issued me a 6 month prescription). Maybe see your PCP/surgeon and see if they think issuing you a prescription may help?

My heartburn was tremendous for the first couple of months. Taking a PPI was all that would help me, over-the-counter meds did nothing. On a brighter note, I haven't had heartburn in months -- it just went away one day. Hopefully you will experience the same. Ask about a prescription, and I hope you feel better soon!

I had pretty bad GERD/Acid Reflux before the surgery and for about 3 weeks post-op, then it just went away and I don't have it anymore at all

I started getting heartburn about week 4, when I started eating soft foods. I never really had it before and I think it was due to me using black pepper on my chicken.. I am sure the jalapenos i cooked with said chicken did not help either.😱

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
