Looking for a surgeon around NY (upstate)

Recommended Posts

I am wanting to get weight loss surgery but I wouldn't even know where to begin looking for a good surgeon. I'm worried and nervous about who to trust and am wondering if anyone can recommend me any in NY or around Albany NY. Also, did anyone else travel a good distance for their surgery? I dont mind the distance if its for a good surgeon.

Don’t be afraid to meet with a few, and pick which one makes you feel comfortable. Make sure it is a complete and comprehensive program, center of excellence. They won’t send you all over the place for evaluations etc.

I did have some trouble with my first hospital, as the BMI criteria was under a range that I would reach... so I had to switch.

I started my journey needing to lose 300 lbs. & after meeting with my surgeon, learning their program, I had to lose over 100 lbs to have surgery. So with my insurance having a mandatory 6 month wait, I hoped I could meet the criteria and have surgery. I lost 100 lbs in 6 months! BEFORE SURGERY! Then the doctor said that I needed to lose another 40 before they would operate. Of which, 20-25lbs will come off in the pre-op diet, so I really needed to lose another 20lbs before the pre-op diet. WTF?!? That would have been almost half my weight loss goal & without surgery! So I decided at that point, I would just do it all on my own.

I then pushed harder at the gym and tightened the diet and still couldn’t make the needle move on the scale. Then I started having knee pain. A sports medicine doctor diagnosed me with arthritis at the age of 35 and strongly recommended I cease the running and weight lifting, just swim.

So now if I wanted to lose weight it was time to find another Bariatric program. I did some looking, called around and would ask the criteria for BMI and insurance. I found one and started all over again. I drive 1.5 hrs each way for the new office. They offered more surgery options and were passionate about me having the right surgery for me.

There were tons of differences between both programs & hospitals. I still visit the first one to use the scale, I feel hospital scales are more Accurate than home, etc.

Dr. Mitchell Roslin at Northwell Health/Northern Westchester hospital performed a revisional rny to a modified ds. He's experienced and innovative. I originally had my rny at Ellis with Dr. Pai but failed to lose as much weight. I live in the Capital Region so i understand your concern. Look into what you want done as i think that'll be helpful.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
