So, what's wrong with me???

Recommended Posts

Hi, all. Hope someone out there can give me an idea on how to handle this. I have an Inamed 10cc band, filled to 2.25 cc. Usually I am just fine at this fill level, tight in the am. but can eat reasonably the rest of the day, and losing weight slowly. But every once in awhile, I go through a period where everything I try to eat or drink gets stuck, and I go through PB's, belching and nausea. This lasts 1 to 4 days, then back to normal. Generally, I feel like I'm at the right fill for me (even though sometimes I probably am able to eat a bit too much!!), so why do I seem to intermittently be too tight? Today is one of these days, and even Water seems to be not going down well.:help::help:

If it's any consolation, I have exactly the same problem (and about the same fill level) every once in a while. Usually I am just at the right fill level, losing gradually but steadily. But about every five or six weeks, I will have two or three days when I am suddenly experiencing much more restriction, and have trouble getting or keeping anything down. Then things return to normal again and all is well. Go figure!! I will be interested to see if anyone else has an explanation for why this happens.

Thanks, Heidi. Somehow, it is helpful to know you're not the only one. I was fearing it was a sign of slippage or erosion.:phanvan

I have tighter days and looser days, can't really explain it although I have noticed that I am much tighter around my period. I just chalk it all up to the band being very finicky. I actually don't mind the fluctuations, it's a good reminder for me to behave! :)

I do have the same problem as well! I do not mind though. I feel like it kinda makes up for those days when i am feeling like i am eating a bit too much! some days i can eat some bread and then some days i can barely get some yogurt down!

Well at least it sounds as though this experience is fairly normal, and on the plus side our tickers all show good weight loss! :scared:

o.k. I must confess that this has happened to me too. One of my fav. foods since banding is Ham salad, I just eat it with a spoon then have some carrot sticks and apple for lunch. I am always tighter in the morning, a bit looser my lunch and o.k. at supper time for sure... but this odd time I'll be tight for apparently no good reason. I ate Ham salad for supper , got 2 bites in the PB'd pain was aweful....

I think I just ate too quickly between bite#1 and bite#2... I really have to watch the start of my meal for this...

If this is normal, it's a bit of a drag. For example, if I eat , or try to eat, anything at all for lunch, and no matter how slowly and how much I chew, I start burping and burping, plus or minus PB"ing, and that is every day. It's true, I love my weight loss, but this is embarassing when I'm around other people!! Happens if I try to eat lunch at the office and people can hear me.;):(

Lisa maybe a teeny weeny bit of a defill will help. I mean like .25. It may be all you need and you will still have good restriction. You are doing incredibly well and it wouldn't be so bad it your weight loss slowed just a bit.

Lisa I am going to be brutal here. We are not the ones you should be asking for advice when it comes to PBing every day. You should be talking with the clinic and doctor. PBing every day can cause serious health problems and should not continue. Donna D is correct better to be slightly underfilled and get your PBing undercontrol. Band erosion or slippage from what I have read is not a pleasnt thing to go thru. Doddie

Hi Lisa,

Does this mean you are only eating one meal per day? I agree with the others, maybe a slight de-fill. Didn't you just get banded in July? Thats amazing weight loss and you could afford to slow down a bit. Surley you of all people (being a Dr.) know the importance of proper nutrition. Good luck with what you decide.

Hi folks, being a new bander I am not familar with the terms, What is PBing? I just had a fil 6 days ago, after I was on liquids for 48 hours and mushies for 48 more, I started back on solids yesterday, not going as well as I expected. Sometimes it hurts just drinking Water, not all the time mind you, sometimes it hurts eating, Maybe i to am not chewing enough and not waiting long enough between bites. It is weird the thing you think that would go down easy don't for instance oatmeal, had a hell of a time with it. Today I had a few low fat crackers and cheese at lunch and that went down just fine. tonite I had a bowl of Soup and at one point it hurt a lot , a bit came back up then there was some pain and then i could feel it going down. this is going to take some getting use to.

Sherrylynn: PB is productive burp a polite word for "puke". If you do not chew your food properly or your band is filled to tight, food cannot pass thru to the stomach and you will get pain like you would never believe. That is when you go to the bathroom and purge the food out of your pouch. Some people it occurs naturally others stick their fingers down their throat. It is very dangerous in that the band can erode or slip. If those things happen you will need surgery to remove the band. I think most of us have PB'd a lot at first then as we changed our ways it becomes more infrequent. Whatever take great pride if you can change your ways without PBing. Doddie

I ended up getting acid reflux because I was a little too tight. Now I am defilled. I have been since August. I am still waiting for everything in my physical life to return to normal. It is better to be a bit on the loose side, I think, that to get reflux.

I must say that although I am at goal I sure do miss having my band guarding me from drifting back into the Land o Gluttony. This is my latest worry: going back to fat.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
