How long did you see, or will you see one for before and after surgery?

I saw her a few times before surgery and I've seen her a few times on routine trips to see my surgeon afterwards. I thought the information I got about Vitamins and the pre and post surgical diets was helpful. Since many of us are dieting pros and have been for years, I didn't get much else out of it.

I only met mine at the preoperative class I was required to take. She does come to the monthly bariatric support group too but I don't see her on a one to one basis.

I saw her every month for six months. And I couldn't miss a month or the insurance 6-month clock would reset to zero. So don't miss an appointment, even if you have a gain! I also took a seminar. And now post-op, I still see her every month because she facilitates the local support group I attend. I love her. She is so real and down to earth and provides a touchstone and accountability for me. And she works within my comfort zone for foods.

I encourage you to find a bariatric RD whom you trust and with whom you can build a solid "forever" relationship with!

I saw mine once before surgery, had a phone conversation and have seen her twice post-op. She's available to me at no charge at any time.

My pre-op program was considerably longer than most (2 years), and I saw my RD every 3 months or so. I see her again at my 1 month follow up. Not sure how often I'll see her after that, but I know she's available for appointments should I have the need.

I have a dietician to see for the rest of my LIFE, that's the way Ohio State University,is set up and what they believe. Oh they are Good Good people there! It's a little like adoption , you are in their lives as long as You Live!🌈😝👍And I am very lucky to have found them. The program that I did at another Center of Excellence hospital- based program , same city, but different people, different attitudes, found out after all that they did not like me, didn't care if I could do all the things they requested ( and since there was a gap of 16-17 months I had to do each twice) The surgeon refused to do my surgery and forbid his partners, the only ones at this particular hospital,to perform surgery on me. Talk about a Death Blow to my emotions, didn't not make plans for suicide because I was at the apathetic end of depression, Why try THAT? I couldn't even succeed at that, just leave permanent scars, and I would have to explain why I could not even succeed at something so simple as Offing Myself!
When I finally settled down a little bit of crap has been added to my state's history .Now they are attempting to remove Statue of Limitation on rape, especially referring to human trafficking, Ohio like many other Midwestern states has a bad reputation for boys and girls getting kidnapped into this seamy underbelly of vice. Perverts seem to. ❤our healthy corn-fed appearance.

@Frustr8, will you please consider creating your own thread where you can share your journey? You can then update that thread with your progress, and anything else you wish to share. It will help keep threads such as this one on topic and relevant to the OP

I'm glad that you like their program - my nephew just finished his RD internship program at OSU (now he can be frocked as an RD!)

Our program didn't have an RD at the time, but I used on associated with our PCP. I only saw her 2 or 3 times but she was very useful. I had already learned a lot about nutrition on my own (as opposed to "dieting") when my wife was going through her WLS journey and I was doing fairly well effectively living a WLS maintenance lifestyle prior to surgery, so she helped in translating the surgeon's nutrition program to my tastes and needs, and then later helped in transitioning to maintenance once all the weight was off and I needed to ramp things up to get stable again.

there’s such a big range of experiences with them it seems ... so far i’ve seen mine once pre-op before i had a date, and i see her three times in the first two months after but then she said i can’t see her after that. i’d really like someone who could be involved longer term including now, so like the idea of the ones that give you that option. At the same time i’d probably not like it if i was told i had to 😃

thanks for sharing some of your experiences

Every month for 6 months before surgery, and every month for at least 6 months after. I had a list of behaviors to incorporate prior to approval. My program is pretty rigorous. I am glad I had that time and coaching prior to surgery, I think it helped get me prepared for life after surgery.

On Friday I have my first post-surgery appt. with a dietician. I have a list of questions, like suggestions for on long hikes and backpacking. She’s a great resource, and specializes in surgery patients and their needs. I’m a fan. I’d hunt one out that you can work with longer term.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
