protein shakes make me puke

Recommended Posts

My surgery is July 8. I just started trying to drink a Protein Shake a day, just to help with the transition. The first day, I drank a full shake and subsequently threw it up. Today, I drank half a shake, felt like throwing up, but I didn't. I have tried Premier shakes (bananas and cream and caramel). Any suggestions on what to try? I'm getting nervous that all shakes will make me sick.

I like the Core Power Protein Shakes much better, they are not as cloyingly sweet and not as dense. You might try thinning your shake with Water or skim milk if it's the consistency that's bothering you. I also like to pour some in a container and freeze it for a bit. It's akin to ice milk and a bit more tolerable. Hang in there and experiment with other brands until you find something that works for you. Protein is essential and this is the easiest way to get it with the least expenditure of calories.

Sometimes, with no rhyme or reason, milk/dairy negatively affects me. I’m thinking of trying something lactose free. I’m ok with the consistency, it’s just about 30 minutes after, I have a horrible stomachache.

You may have to go to soy or plant Protein. And whey provokes reaction more than isolate.

I got an unflavored soy isolate, mixed it with Water and crystal light. It’s not wonderful, but my stomach can tolerate it. Only 20g of Protein per serving, but at least I can stomach it.

That's a shame. I've heard of other people not liking Protein Shakes on here in the forums. I like them. I use premade GNC Lean shakes (chocolate)

I don’t mind the taste, the whey just wrecks my stomach.

Natures best zero carb Protein drink/water 40 grams protein and hydration all in one. the texture is like a sports drink.

Your tastes buds will change after surgery. Nutrition is more important than taste. You won’t be reliant on shakes after real food stage. If you are throwing up call your Dr to see if it’s a medical issues

Macros:

Whey makes me vomit. Try soy shakes. They have delicious chocolate and vanilla ones on Amazon.

Why not try the chocolate soy isolate? SO GOOOOOD. https://www.amazon.com/Sports-Protein-Isolate-Chocolate-2-Pound/dp/B001DNV53E/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=chocolate+soy+isolate&qid=1558541209&s=gateway&sr=8-3

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
