Will I ever be normal again!?

Recommended Posts

I'm 8weeks out and I feel like I'm never going to be normal! I'm always afraid of complications. I'm having issues with foods. It's taking me forever to advance and I get NO HELP from my dietician she doesn't even answer calls or emails and i can't seem to find another one. I just want to be ok.

What issues are you having with food? Nausea, vomiting? Its still early in your journey. If it makes you feel any better I'm 7 weeks post RNY gastric bypass and still on Protein Shakes only!

Yes I try to eat foods I'm SUPPOSED to be able to eat and I eat small bites with a timer so I don't eat too fast and I chew till it can't be chewed anymore and STILL I throw up with some things, so I gave to go back to liquids. It's getting to me and I find I'm CONSTANTLY worried that I'm never going to be normal again like being able to eat food like a normal person.

It will get better. It does take time. It took me a while to be able to feel "normal" eating. My Dr prescribed me a 90 day supply of pantoprazole which helped me alot. I ate the foods that weren't too hard and as time passed I was able to gradually incorporate regular foods. I still can't eat a lot... I'm only able to eat just under a cup... I'm still learning that it's ok if I can't finish my food...I ALWAYS have left overs. But...again...it will get better for you!

which surgery did you have? If it was gastric bypass, if this doesn't clear up soon, in spite of taking really small bites and chewing them to death, call your surgeon. It could be a stricture. That said, it does take some people longer to advance than others..

Yes It was gastric bypass. I have an appt. With my surgeon June first and everyone keeps saying it takes some people longer but it is really hard.

if you get to the point that you can't keep liquids down, either, then it's definitely a stricture, and they HAVE to deal with it then. You can survive for awhile without food, but not fluids. So if you get to that point, don't wait for your appt - call them or better yet - go to the ER!

Watch out for your stoma narrowing down, this is a stricture or stenosis, and I am a veteran of that war and also have ulcerations in my jejunem- the send third of our small intestine that our pouch now attached to. Mine I believe to happened at 2 weeks but I did not have a confirmatory endoscopy until 6 weeks past my surgery date. And I have been fighting it every since. It really is kind of rare, but you will find there's me, Briswife and Mousecat all active. I believe my Bari- bud is the one closest to having all facets rectified. But I do still vomit frequently, my pouch is tender, sometimes it feels like Precious clenchs herself like an angry little ✊ fist, and I have a lot of right subcostal pain, that means right below the ribs, that is where my ulcers, the great majority, of which are there. Oh my weight loss is wonderful, 150 down from my Highest Weight, and 98 at last weighing since my surgery. But it has been a bumpy journey getting there, at this point. almost 9 months, I had expected " The Good Times To Roll", OH I don't think my Bariatric Clinic is that worried about me, but they are merely watching, I'm having to LIVE IT! They just seem to call it All ---Atypical. Healing Procee. Well Whoopee Ding isn't that just so special!!!🚩🎪🚩

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
