When to get the surgery

Recommended Posts

Hello!

My name is Taylor and I am 25 years old. I am 5' 4" and my weight fluctuates around 235-250. I've struggled with my weight since I was a pre-teen despite being active. My mother got gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y) about 10 years ago and has been very successful. I've tried many diets (WW, Profile by Sanford, Whole30, Keto, calorie counting) and nothing ever sticks and I always go back to my range weight of 235-245. I can never lose more than 20 pounds and always end up going back to the weight I've mentioned above.

I would love to get this surgery sometime soon, and I am in the process of setting up a consult with a bariatric surgeon.

I have a trip to Italy and Ireland for two weeks in September. And then my family and I are spending Christmas in Hawaii (Ive never been). Half of me wants to get the surgery sometime soon, before going to Europe to look and feel better so I can look back on this trip positively.

On the other hand, my mom mentioned that I should wait until after Europe so I can enjoy the food (which Italy is known for).

I could try to lose some weight before then, but then I dont think I would be eligible for surgery because my BMI would be lower. And I know I will just go back to my weight range eventually and go through the never ending cycle with my weight.

Can anyone offer some advice? Any would be much appreciated!

Thank you :)

I would try to get it done between the Europe trip and Hawaii trip. That way you can enjoy those once in a lifetime food options in Italy, but then you start to lose weight and get skinnier by the time you're in swimwear in paradise!

Taylor, depending on where you choose to get surgery, it may take you 6 months or longer to go through the process. There are a few places that are quicker, but most of us had a 6 month or longer "pre-op" period when you go through counseling as well as informational and nutritional classes. There's no need to delay getting this part of the process started. (And, at least with my insurance, your first weigh-in with the surgeon's team is the weight they use to determine your qualifying BMI since they want you to lose weight during the 6 months.) They don't schedule surgery until you've completed all the pre-op requirements. Good luck!

Well, I had to go through a bunch of hoops that my insurance laid down before I could get it done. It took 6 months, and then I delayed it a few months because I had some things I had to take care of before I could be laid up for a couple of weeks. So that might make the decision for you. But I think overall, it's a personal preference. I personally would wait until after I went to Europe because I wouldn't want to risk ruining things. But that's just me.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
