I had my consultation with surgeon, Psychologist and dietitian today. I was 100% decided about getting the Sleeve based on research related to my chronic disease and ghrelin. Now that I am home from consult I have all kinds of new questions. I am now just slightly concerned about the heartburn issue. I get mild to moderate heartburn 1-2 times in a 2-3 week period. Have any of you had mild/moderate heartburn before surgery and gone ahead and done it anyway and then been fine?

I used to have that as well but I learned a trick. Put in a little bit of baking soda in food especially if acidic. It neutralizes the acid. No more for me.

Be Careful that your Electrolytes don't get screwy, Sodium Bicarb is not necessarily a real good choice. Does your surgeon know and permit this?
My cousin ate so much Sodium Bicarb that he kept Arm and Hammer in business all on his own. Turns out it wasn't Simple GERD back then in the 1990s, he had Cardiac Disease undiagnosed until then. Luckily there were things that could be done, died last year at 85.

I had GERD and Acid Reflux for 7 years before sleeve surgery. Now it's completely gone!

Pre-surgery I was prescribed Pantoprazole by the gastroenterologist who did my endoscopy. I kept taking it through surgery and recovery. (I'm not almost 4 months post-op)

Anyhow, even though I was still mindlessly taking the Pantoprazole, I assumed my heartburn had gone away because now I eat nothing compared to what I ate pre-surgery. But once my Pantoprazole ran out, I started getting heartburn again like the old days.

Anyone else experience this? Will I have to take Pantoprazole for the rest of my life?

I understand why I had frequent heartburn when I was 400 pounds and ate everything that wasn't nailed down but I'm confused about why I still have heartburn now post-op.

Any advice is really appreciated. Thank you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
