Newbie trying to decide where to get the Lap-Band and need some support.

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, my name is Mona and I just took out a $10K loan to have the Lap-Band surgery which I so desperately need. I am torn between Dr. Kirshenbaum in Colorado and Dr. Aceves in Mexicali, Mexico. I am really leaning towards Dr. Aceves because of his experience and the fact that I am at 62.2 BMI and he has experience working with people like me whom are EXTREMELY voluptuous! :) I am planning to visit the facility in Mexicali and meet with the staff and doctor to ask some questions and see if I feel comfortable, thanks to a great board member who has been extremely kind to me.

I was wondering if any of you have any advice or experience, good, bad, or indifferent, with either of these doctors. I would appreciate anything that may help in my Quest.

By the way, I have enjoyed reading many of the posts on this board. I spend at least 5 hours a day at work just reading the posts but have just now decided to join. Hmmmm, no wonder my work is never done.

One thing to keep in consideration is where will you have your fills performed? A lot of the local doctors won't do fills on people when they haven't performed the actual surgery.

Good Luck - you won't regret your decision.

Hi Mona,

I will also be gettin the band.I just got my money to pay for mine also.

I will be going to Dr.Aceves on Dec 7th for my surgery.I did alot of research in the last months and finaly made my decision on him.I went by his experience, his stats, his aftercare(knowing he would be there for me),along with other things.

I feel like I will be in one of the best's Doc's hands.

When are you planning on visiting his facilty?

Jen

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
