Not allowed to lose or gain pre-op?

Recommended Posts

I will tentatively have surgery the end of August. Hurray! I'm super excited, but because I have no co-morbidities I have to be at 40 BMI. I'm about a 40.6 right now, so I don't have a lot of wiggle room. I can't lose much weight or I fall out of the program, and I can't gain weight or I won't get cleared for surgery. Yikes! No pressure.

Anyone in a similar boat? Or was in a similar boat? Got any advice?

@SouthernPhoenix

WELCOME WELCOME WELCOME

can't tell if insurance has already approved you if (hopefully) they have -

your starting BMI is what counts for insurance - if you loose more weight

now it won't effect anything - the insurance refers to the first #s given by

the dr (ie 40.6 and startingweight

If you have NOT been approved yet, your right, you must maintain 40.6,

if you go below that # you might not qualify since you have no commorbities

check everything out - one way or the other i'm sure you'll figure things out,

and all will be fine with the world☺️

August here you come!!!!

good luck bud

I’m in the same boat right now! I don’t have approval yet (still in the pre-approval stage) and I can’t lose to much or they won’t approve but of course you can’t gain. My insurance requires 6 months of monitoring by a physician so it’s been 5 months of it unease with one more month before submittal to insurance. Good luck! And if you find any tips please let me know!

Very weird, I've heard about needing a minimum BMI sure but not having to stay the same.. yes if you go too low you won't qualify but if you gain weight that would show you need help and need surgery...

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
