Questions to ask surgeon

Recommended Posts

I just went to my first seminar on Friday and have an appointment with the surgeon tomorrow. What type of questions should I ask? Also I don’t know where to start here at the forums. I have so many questions about the post op diet plans. I’m not worried about the pre diet plans, I’m interested in knowing about the solid diet food plan afterwards. I want to know what I’ll be eating. Wondering how much weight I will lose, I’m 255, was 331 two years ago. I just survived a major surgery last year for a ruptured colon and was septic. I had a colostomy bag for 4 months then had a resection done, so I’m not worried about the actual surgery as I went to hell and back. Eating Clear Liquids, or soft liquids don’t bother me. I just want to see a typical post surgery diet with natural foods. Right now I’m on a low sodium, diabetic, ckd diet.

Congratulations on starting your journey! Your surgical group or nutritionist will provide you with a diet plan of what to eat once you're finally on solid foods. There are a couple of great threads on here which have pictures of foods people are eating. One is called before and after. No one can predict how much weight you will lose as many factors come into play including genetics. Just focus on following your surgeon's plan for you, and getting healthy.

Ask your surgeon his/her success rate with the surgery and how many he/she has performed. Your nutritionist will give you sample diet plans. You can pretty much eat anything but carbs or sugar and about 600-800 calories per day. the bariatric plate says to fill a plate with 50% Protein, 25% veggies, 25% grains. Eat protein first. If full, stop. If still hungry, eat the veggies. Same thing. Don't eat the grains unless still hungry and eat them last.

asking how much you’ll lose is a good question ... as well as the things you’ve written here about post op diet. have you seen a dietician/nutritionist already? because they can help with a lot of these questions. i wrote a list of things i wanted to know so i had these in the appointment to refer to. hope the appointment goes well

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
