Can't decide sleeve or bypass

I'm not sure I'm still trying to get approval. I have alot of stomach problems. Reflux disease and ulcers in the past. Nausea alot. Severe Constipation. Does any one know how dangerous it is to have either. I'm scared they will cut out the good funtioning stomach and I'll be stuck with the bad. Then being sick for my life. If so I'd rather be fat. The point isn't to be sick or worse the rest of my life.[emoji15] [emoji16] [emoji40] [emoji44]

But with reflux issues a BYPASS might be best but your doctor's will know more

Not dangerous at all. They've been doing these surgeries for a long time. I chose bypass because I had reflux/GERD and sometimes the sleeve makes that much worse. I'm 5 weeks out from bypass and despite a setback, am glad I did it. No regrets.

No surgery has a zero percent complication rate. It is simply not accurate to say "not dangerous at all". When I was making my decision I did a lot of research and according to medical journals gastric bypass has a 21% complication rate and sleeve gastrectomy has 13%. That includes both major and minor complications.

@100away - yes there are risks. But there are benefits too. You need to sit down with a surgeon and get all your questions answered from a medical professional's expertise, not just ours. You need to weigh the risks and benefits of surgery versus the risks of living long term with GERD, ulcers, and obesity. Because as much as you may be scared of bypass being dangerous - so are those things. GERD can increase your chances of esophageal cancer. Obesity leads to diabetes and heart disease. It's a big decision to be made and you are doing the right thing by asking questions and getting advice before jumping right in without considering the risks.

In my defense, I was not referring to complications, as I have a serious one myself. I was referring to the chances of death, which I consider "dangerous,". I am one of the 20 percent with complications, and have a very severe stricture. I still think the procedure is safe.

I chose bypass because I also have GERD/Ulcers. The sleeve often makes these issues exponentially worse and the bypass often eliminates these issues.

I thought I wanted bypass because I didn't like the idea of them permanently removing my stomach from me, but two of my other doctors felt that bypass was too radical for me and wanted me to do sleeve instead, so I did.

Get the bypass. I am converting to the bypass because my reflux got worse after the sleeve.

Weigh your options with your surgeon. I personally got the sleeve because I didn’t like the idea of my intestines messed with. I like the sleeve but it made my acid reflux worse! Now my surgeon wants to do the bypass to get rid of all that. I also think the restriction of the bypass is better than the sleeve. One year out from the sleeve and I have to face that fear now.

I was literally back and forth since August 2018.

I finally have firmly decided on the bypass about 1 week ago. I have no GERD or acid reflux or anything like that.
