HAS ANYONE ELSE NEEDED TO LOSE WEIGHT TO BE APPROVED FROM YOUR INSURANCE??

Recommended Posts

Has anyone needed to lose weight in order to get VSG? This is the most frustrating thing in the world. 🙄

No, I didn't have any requirements for approval other than meeting BMI and comorbidities. I didn't even have to do six months of weight loss management.

Yes. My insurance required that i be on a medically supervised diet for three months. I had to be weighed monthly and submit progress reports through my dietitian. I guess they wanted proof that i was committed to weight loss and a good investment in my own insurance benefits! I lost 8 lbs. the first month but then gained 5 pounds back in the second (which turned out to be PMS) and then lost 3 in the last month. Despite the yo-yo i was approved. It was frustrating but i paid only $350 out of pocket for everything.

I had to be on a medically supervised diet for 6 months, although they did not dictate how much I had to lose. Over the 6 months I probably lost 15 pounds.

I had to maintain a 5% weight loss over 6 months in order to get approved. If you don't, they also required a 6 month food diary that would be reviewed to see why you didn't lose the 5%. The easy part was losing what I needed to initially, the hard part was maintaining it for 6 months.

Good luck to you

Gee must be nice lol when i met with the dietician all she wanted me to do was to lose 10 lbs. Which i felt was easy but that was like 3 months ago lol so this month i got very serious about eating healthy and working out and i go in tomorrow to my PCP to get weighed in. I hope im down but i wont give up!

In Australia all we need is doctor and surgeon to approve surgery that's it but I do have to see a dietitian at least once before surgery and do a 2 week Protein Shake diet to help operation he said to shrink liver but may also shed a few kgs.

But even with full coverage we still pay gap out of pocket anywhere between 3k and 6k generally but that covers hospital stay any meds need in hospital.

No psych needed, no supervised diet or hurdles needed but I've been doing my own mental preparation for months before taking the leap myself.

Looking at a late September surgery! (12 month wait prerequisite)

Is there a specific amount of weight needed? Maybe your BMI is too high for SLEEVE but not for RNY BYPASS?

They may be merely seeing if you are committed enough to try losing even before your surgery.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
