gained 29 pounds since August. Was put on Zoloft for anxiety last spring. Had maintained weight for over a year. Didn’t change diet or exercise. Anyone else experience this?

Hey Jay453!

I experienced the same thing....I kept my weight off for 8 years. I went from 272 lbs and a size 22 to my lowest weight of 139 and a size 2. I maintained that for about 6 years then hit 50 years old and oh boy has it been a struggle! I was very disciplined for all of those years and then got a little lax and gained 27 lbs and 3 pants sizes. I've started working on getting back on track, made some changes and am down 13 lbs and a pant size. Have 14 more to go to be back at my 145 and size 2-4!

I had to find new things that worked since things that I did pre 50 doesn't work anymore!

Sucks. I feel like an idiot complaining about being 180 pounds but terrified of the gain. If it’s the meds I’d rather have the anxiety and take this weight back off.

You shouldn't feel like an idiot. I got up to 172 and freaked out! So I get it!

This is kind of a repost. Had the same conversation with someone this morning. You’re not alone.

29 pounds is much easier than a 50 80 100+. Pound gain.... It can be done.

If you have maintained for a year and not gained means you are eating maintenance calories. Log your food. Dial your calories back to get your body in weight loss mode. Back to baraitric basics.

Years out, much of weight loss is fighting the mental battles to get back on track.

Seriously, I have motivators on my fridge to remind me of my goal and where I want to be. Its right in my face when I am seeking food. Makes me stop and ask. Am I hungry? How much room for calories do I have left in my log for the day? Is this boredom or emotional/stress eating? (see photos below *lol*)

All I can share is my personal experience. I’m a sleeve. My surgery was in 2014. I have worked off a gain in my third year.

  • Log your food. Make sure you are eating your weight loss calories and macros. I’m female 5”5” My calories are 900 to 1100 Carbs are 60 grams for weight loss. ***We are all different - You may need to dial in your calories to see what range you lose weight***. If you need help with this let me know.
  • Get temptation out of the house and keep healthy options for sweet and salty cravings.
  • I have a bit less restriction than I had in the first year. I found ways to fill the extra space and keep my calories/macros in range. Add as much veggies as you like until full.
  • Ditch liquid and soft stage Protein. Dense Protein will help keep you feeling more satisfied.

I’m also back in weight loss mode for the summer* My food log is open.

I am a huge fan of myfitnesspal! I have used it since before my surgery when I had to lose 40lbs before they would do the surgery. I stopped logging for about a year but I am back to it now! It really helps!!!

I’m 41, use myfitness pal everyday for the past 2 months to try to reverse the trend. Never even come close to the calories allotted for my height and weight to lose. That’s why I was wondering about anyone’s experience with the meds. I’ve read inconclusive reports for it slowing metabolism but who knows. Back in the fight I go

Yes! Zoloft is a medication that can cause weight gain. I have been on about all of them and I look them up to make sure that is not a side effect. But Zoloft is the worst! So talk to your doctor. We surely don’t need any thing making it harder!

What source did you use that said weight gain is a side effect of Zoloft? I've been on Zoloft for years before surgery and have continued since surgery one year ago, and have not noticed weight gain because of it. This screenshot actually mentions weight *loss* as a possible side effect.

Most sites and the medical PDR will say it causes weight gain. I don’t know when they changed it to weight loss. I worked in the medical field over 20 years too and never seen anyone lose weight on it. I know I sure didn’t either when I took it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
